indonesia, especially sparsely populated sumatra, has the largest deposit of peat or decomposed plant undergrowth in the jungles. it is several feet deep beneath the visible surface. forest fires of 1997 ignited peat fires (or it might have been peat fires that ignited forest fires - verdict still out), and once they started spreading and smoldering beneath the surface, there's nothing much any authorities can do except to let the natural buried fuel burn out. they don't go away unless the entire land is submerged in water, and they can smolder in the depths for decades waiting for the next prolonged dry and hot season to re-ignite.

the region lacks world class expertise in geographic science, geology, vulcanology and marine science to tackle regional issues for the long term. even if there are vulcanologists and geologists in indonesia, they lack the kind of passion, clout, visibility and experience/expertise that angmo subject matter experts exhibit. the region is such a "rich" natural setting for so many earth science disciplines from jungle flora to seismic shifts to volcanoes to marine life, yet natives of the region are oblivious to its violatility, danger, explosiveness, destructive power, and earth-altering and earth-shattering catastrophic implications.

i would have thought that sg would be a natural entity to contribute intellectual and expert thinking to the safety and long term survival of the entire region with regard to these important matters, but i was wrong. sinkies are not interested in long term "what if" issues unless they get hit directly in the pocket or in the face. no families including those in power and influence are going to send their kids to universities to study earth sciences or planetary science or particle physics that deal with larger mankind survival matters. sinkies are materialistic, short term, whiney and greedy bastards. same with many regional minds who have followed the sinkie path of economic and material showmanship.

and they forget they live in an extremely geologic dangerous region. fret not. angmo will cum to the rescue. you can bet on it that every cuntry in the regin will start hiring world class angmo experts to investigate, find root causes and produce reports and recommendations. shame on the collective "natives" of the region.
