on the cost of the fireworks :o:o:o

every time i see one of them bursting, i kept thinking: that's a new definition of "i've got the money to burn" :D:D:D

tax payers' money right? :confused::confused::confused:

Am interested too. This is what I got in usd;

"Well there are a lot of factors that decide the costs. Like shell size, shell type, type of detonation (how it's set off [computers, hand lit, etc] and location.

Usually 6 inch shells are common. My friend recently had a wedding and had a 5 minute show with only 3 inch shells and it cost 4,000. My city is very wealthy with it's money and has three huge shows throughout the city on the 4th of July. The biggest one is in a huge park we have and at the end it launches a 16 inch shell. The rest of the shells are 10 or 12 inches and are still massive. The 16 inch is the size of an exercise ball just to give you an idea. Anyway, that show costs easily >100,000 and the other two shows range in 60000 to 80000. I only know this because my dad is a Fire Battalion Chief in town. So yeah, it's not surprising a small town cannot afford a show. They're not cheap.

ADDED: BTW the shows in my town are computer launched and timed to music. Which hugely boosts the cost. Also, it's run and setup by over 20 trained pyrotechnics."

There is no standard price. For a same number of shots budget can spread in a rather vast range. Brand and quality and country of origin differences applies. Some are complicated some others are simple. There are also package deals like contractor to setup and fire the whole thing, so depending on fire from where. Expensive to do say from MBS or Singapore Flyer, cheap or FOC if you use SAF boys to setup and carry out.:D

Complicated ones integrates many tiny shot elements with lots of works to put together, they integrate tiny shots into a bunch small shots and then into a big one, it disintegrate level by level when fired, these requires assembly labor.

The new year celebration which you just saw on TV should have cost around $1 million, give or take.

it's not cheap. a small town can spend anywhere from 10k to 100k for a small fireworks display while a large city can spend millions. despite bankruptcy and shrinking budgets, u.s. towns and cities splurge on fireworks during 4th of july and new year's eve. local folks and citizens would not be happy if towns/cities scrap fireworks celebrations altogether. your mayorship would be a very short termed one even if you were to claim insolvency or belt tightening. no one would forgive you. fireworks in the u.s. are an intrinsic part of american lives, way of living, culture and it's sacrosanct. a must, not a luxury. without it, might as well dissolve the constitution, break up the states, burn the flag and send everyone packing to canada or mexico. a town, city, state or nation ceases to be an organized entity if she cuts out everything which seems remotely luxurious and has everyone stick to bare necessities, stay home in a cocoon, and cut off contact on the internet, which ironically at one time, was a luxury and still is to many.

you should be lucky that sg celebrates with fireworks from a single budget, and she does it in one place...economy of scale. here in the bay area, every freaking town and city has its own fireworks. from usd10k to usd10m per city. go up to mission hills in fremont or the hills in milpitas before midnight tonite or every 4th of july, and you shall see separate fireworks going on in over a dozen towns and cities. if all these neighboring towns and cities were to get together and combine the show, they would have a much better bigger show yet save a ton of taxpayers' money. sg is doing it right, so don't be a souless spiritless liberal leftist whiner who complains all the time your precious tax pittance is spent. unlike california here, your tax dollars are spent very wisely by your gov.

Its symbolism to usher in a new year similar to spending a small fortune on wedding and child birth. I am sure the younger ones look forward to it and enjoy it. It probably half the salary of a GLC CEO.

not fireworks, then how should a country spend it's money to celebrate a new year?

Fireworks are good la. Don't KPKB on New Year la.

don't be mistaken, i enjoyed last night's fireworks thoroughly. only thing that boggles me is this: if we're rich enough to enjoy such luxury, why aren't we reaching out to the lower strata and helping them to get out of the rut?
being a new convert to the right wing, i learned from experience that i can't bring a man a fish everyday but i sure can teach him how to fish. problem is: are we doing enough in teaching them to fish? are we lending them enough tools to fish?

If things develop to such a stage that it becomes impossible or too expensive or inconvenient to enjoy it on site and has to be done purely online, then a virtual fireworks show can be done cheaper especially if there are standardized software apps. Any way most of us watch it on TV. Also remember the Beijing Olympics? They faked some of the fireworks effects.

No one cares about fireworks until the PAP introduced it, and the PAP turns around and accuses Singaporeans of not being prudent with money.

Why do you need fireworks? Singaporeans have passed many new years and national days without fireworks. It was the PAP who introduced this totally unnecessary extravagance. And the PAP turns around and accuses Singaporeans of not being prudent with our money. The PAP withholds many things from Singaporeans citing financial prudence, so burning money like this is totally inconsistent with what the PAP has always been preaching.

Why should the country spend unnecessarily to celebrate a new year? Each individual can find their own celebration very well.

... only thing that boggles me is this: if we're rich enough to enjoy such luxury, why aren't we reaching out to the lower strata and helping them to get out of the rut? ...
u tink elites prefer moni 2 b spent on firewoks or on helping lower strata 2 catch up wif dem? ...

The cost will be at least $1million. Is OK compare to Ho Jin lost billions gamble around the world.
But what I worry is one year there is few even of firework in the Marina Bay/reservoir it will pollute the water. And in future Sinkie will drink water from the bay.

It is fine to burn money to celebrate but not to use it to help the poor and the old. To me, the old folks should be rewarded for making Singapore what it is today.

[h=2]anyone any idea?[/h]

Here are the guys who knows best.

<p><img src="http://englishrussia.com/images/112012/howtofirefireworks/howtofirefireworks-9.jpg" alt="" /></p>
<p>We all love fireworks. Let’s see what has to be done to make a good firework show.</p>
<p><br />
<p><img src="http://media.englishrussia.com/112012/howtofirefireworks/howtofirefireworks-10.jpg" alt="" /></p>
<p>Preparatory works begin beforehand when they dig artillery mortars (metal or plastic pipes) to shoot from into the ground.</p>
<p><img src="http://media.englishrussia.com/112012/howtofirefireworks/howtofirefireworks-11.jpg" alt="" /></p>
<p>Besides, the mortars go even deeper into the underground during the launching.</p>
<p><img src="http://media.englishrussia.com/112012/howtofirefireworks/howtofirefireworks-12.jpg" alt="" /></p>
<p>Each mortal has to be loaded. The charge they load artillery mortars with is a bag with a fuse (paper pipe with a string soaked in black powder).</p>
<p>Into the fuse, they insert two wires with a little drop that looks like the one from a Bengal light.</p>
<p>Then, all that has to be covered with a plastic film so that no water could get inside.</p>

<p><img src="http://media.englishrussia.com/112012/howtofirefireworks/howtofirefireworks-13.jpg" alt="" /></p>
<p><img src="http://media.englishrussia.com/112012/howtofirefireworks/howtofirefireworks-14.jpg" alt="" /></p>
<p><img src="http://media.englishrussia.com/112012/howtofirefireworks/howtofirefireworks-15.jpg" alt="" /></p>
<p><img src="http://media.englishrussia.com/112012/howtofirefireworks/howtofirefireworks-16.jpg" alt="" /></p>
<p>Control panels.</p>
<p><img src="http://media.englishrussia.com/112012/howtofirefireworks/howtofirefireworks-17.jpg" alt="" /></p>
<p>They are situated in a trench that firework men dig for themselves.</p>
<p><img src="http://media.englishrussia.com/112012/howtofirefireworks/howtofirefireworks-18.jpg" alt="" /></p>
<p>Through this ‘window’, they will watch the fireworks.</p>
<p><img src="http://media.englishrussia.com/112012/howtofirefireworks/howtofirefireworks-19.jpg" alt="" /></p>
<p>This work is very dangerous and sometimes fireworks fire in the wrong direction which is fraught with serious consequences.</p>

<p><img src="http://media.englishrussia.com/112012/howtofirefireworks/howtofirefireworks-20.jpg" alt="" /></p>
<p>Now they have to connect the control panels with batteries which will apply voltage to the wires which will spark thus setting fire to the fuse which will result in an explosion.</p>
<p><img src="http://media.englishrussia.com/112012/howtofirefireworks/howtofirefireworks-21.jpg" alt="" /></p>
<p><img src="http://media.englishrussia.com/112012/howtofirefireworks/howtofirefireworks-22.jpg" alt="" /></p>
<p><img src="http://media.englishrussia.com/112012/howtofirefireworks/howtofirefireworks-23.jpg" alt="" /></p>
<p>It’s dark, so we can start the show!</p>
<p><img src="http://media.englishrussia.com/112012/howtofirefireworks/howtofirefireworks-24.jpg" alt="" /></p>
<p><img src="http://media.englishrussia.com/112012/howtofirefireworks/howtofirefireworks-25.jpg" alt="" /></p>
<p><img src="http://media.englishrussia.com/112012/howtofirefireworks/howtofirefireworks-26.jpg" alt="" /></p>
<p><img src="http://media.englishrussia.com/112012/howtofirefireworks/howtofirefireworks-27.jpg" alt="" /></p>
<p><img src="http://media.englishrussia.com/112012/howtofirefireworks/howtofirefireworks-28.jpg" alt="" /></p>
<p><img src="http://media.englishrussia.com/112012/howtofirefireworks/howtofirefireworks-29.jpg" alt="" /></p>
<p><img src="http://media.englishrussia.com/112012/howtofirefireworks/howtofirefireworks-30.jpg" alt="" /></p>
<p><img src="http://media.englishrussia.com/112012/howtofirefireworks/howtofirefireworks-31.jpg" alt="" /></p>

<p><img src="http://media.englishrussia.com/112012/howtofirefireworks/howtofirefireworks-32.jpg" alt="" /></p>
<p><img src="http://media.englishrussia.com/112012/howtofirefireworks/howtofirefireworks-33.jpg" alt="" /></p>
<p>After the fireworks, firework men have to check if all the mortars have fired so the next day they could dig them out to bring to another place where fireworks are scheduled.</p>

What will happen to those not fire?
I,m sure not 100% will burn and shoot into sky.

Yes. It is very very expensive. And Yes. It is taxpayers' money.

It is better, more economical, and pleasess MORE people, to let the commoners (and their children) fire off firecrackers (not fireworks) on celebratory occassion.

Cheers!
