Japan’s Carrier-Killing Missile.

asm-3.jpg

by KYLE MIZOKAMI

By now you might have read about the Chinese DF-21 Anti-Ship Ballistic Missile, the "supposed killer" of American aircraft carriers.

Now meet XASM-3, the killer of Chinese aircraft carriers.

Asian Defence has the pics. The diagrams are apparently taken from a South Korean Website. Jane’s also has a short writeup.

XASM-3 is stealthy. It’s supersonic, and has a range of 200 kilometers. I can’t find anything in the way of dimensions or warhead size. It looks slightly longer than a Harpoon slung on an F-16.

The XASM-3 represents a quantum leap in maritime firepower for the Japanese Self-Defense Force.

The predecessor to the XASM-3, the ASM-2, first came into service in 1998. Development of the new missile apparently started in the early 2000s. Japan tends to replace weapons systems fairly quickly, but that is a very short turnaround. Perhaps not coincidentally, that was when speculation first started as to whether or not China would develop aircraft carriers.

Japan may not have a nuclear deterrent, but there are some critical conventional capabilities that Japan should invest in as a deterrent. This is one of them.

Japan does not have to match Chinese carriers with Japanese carriers, because there is no policy that drives a need for them. Japan merely needs a cost-effective way to kill Chinese carriers.

China’s Stealth Fighter: The Russian View

PLA-J-20-%E5%8C%BF%E8%B9%A4%E6%88%B0%E6%A9%9F-132.jpg

RIA Novosti‘s Ilya Kramnik takes a skeptical view of China’s new J-20 stealth-fighter prototype, noting that “China has consistently lagged 15 to 20 years behind the world leaders in aircraft manufacturing.” The Russian analyst’s salient points:

Engine

It is not clear what kind of engine the plane will have. Some say it will use the prospective Chinese-made WS-15 engine with a maximum thrust exceeding 18,000 kg, but the engine is still in the pipeline.

China has been unable to reproduce Russia’s highly efficient high-temperature turbofan AL-31F engine, designed in the early 1980s and currently mounted on the Su-27 fighter and its modifications.

The engines for Sukhoi planes manufactured in China are made in Russia and then assembled and adjusted in China.

Materials
A fifth-generation stealth fighter must be able to evade radar, and so it must be made from modern composite materials. However, China does not produce such materials in commercial amounts, and experts doubt that it can develop and produce them for its Air Force.

Electronics
Electronic equipment, primarily radar, in China stands at approximately the same level as its engines. Chinese designs fall short of the capabilities of their Russian, European and American counterparts. Although China has been gradually narrowing the gap, it still has to import modern electronic equipment for its aircraft.

Weapons
The guided weapons used in the Chinese Air Force were mostly copied from U.S., Israeli and Russian prototypes made in the 1960s through 1980s. China will have to spend a great deal of time and effort to develop its own weapons, even if it borrows or copy elements of prototypes bought from other countries.

hahaha...with conventional war heads, the missiles are unlikely to cause much harm to an aircraft carrier......unless they got hit by a large numbers....
the most effective weapon to sink a ship is still the goot old TORPEDO....

PRC has no (battle-ready) aircraft carriers (yet). PRC doesn't need any aircraft carrier to launch air raids on Japan. Look at the map. In WW2, Japan kept Chinese and American warplanes out of combat range by occupying the entire Chinese eastern seaboard, until the fall of Midway and Okinawa did Japan main islands come into air raid range.

Today, whether by air raid or missile, Japan is sitting duck to Chinese target practice, with or without US. What's US going to do? Embargo or invade PRC? The costs would cripple US first. The best defence is to give PRC no political or economic reason to do something like that.

Yes, not YET.
They are building one..keel laid already.
Supposed to become operational 2015.

A/c carriers are part of any blue water navy.

thks...of course i over-simplified it......
basically missile is just a modern high tech way of ordnance delivery system.
it can be released far away from the intended targets....
In the past, attacking aircrafts have to go near to the ships and hence are vulnerable themselves....
simply put...it is more difficult to defend against missiles than aircrafts....therefore bigger concern....
the damage is done by the type and amount of explosives, not whether it is from bombs or missiles....
torpedos have been proven to be the most effective way to sink a ship.....
limitation is that you have to get much nearer the target....

torpedos caused more damge by causing underwater flooding, and directly affecting the critical compartments like engine rooms, it also damages the ship structure and for smaller ships it breaks the keel of the ship....

Yes, no aircraft carrier is no blue water navy. But PRC needs no aircraft carrier or blue water navy against Japan.

Anyway, many people mistaken aircraft carriers are sitting ducks to modern missile technologies. Far from that, it's still blue water navy flagship in conventional warfare over long distances. Without aircraft carriers, Britain couldn't have beaten Argentina over Falklands at their own front door, for example. The distance from Britain to Argentina is like from Japan to New Zealand.

An aircraft carrier..by its very nature and size is a huge ammunition dump. For long endurance at sea it also have large amount of fuel tanks holding 100,000s of liters of fuel. One direct hit from a anti-ship missile with a shaped charge can blow the whole ship to pieces. Hence the tactical term "layers of defense " meant for a/c carriers. Using its air-crafts to prevent any a/c from approaching it to fire a missile.

Ballistic missiles are better alternative than old age torpedo weapons. The missiles are designed to hit the ship way below the waterline , mid section or lobbed strike. They are thus - can be made mission specific ..i.e configurable from the launch aircraft.

Isn't the problem one of penetrating a carriers 400 km security bubble? Meaning aircraft will be blasted before it can penetrate that bubble.

The whole point of ballistic carrier weaponry is that It is sat guided and it has a tremendous entry speed . Being sat guided makes it harder to jam. The is what makes the Chinese weapon so deadly.

Anyway, Japn with a shrinking pop is a spent force and any offensive military posture will bring out the Korean and Chinese.

Also no mention of tracking capability. If it uses radar it will be jammed to kingdom come. The a problems with hitting a carrier group is to be able to track and deliver coordinates to the missiles. To be successful you need a Sat. That slow moving fighter in pix will be blasted out of the sky before it can even come near.

Aiyo! So tiny can hope to sink carrier?

Can not fit nuke warhead for this size. Conventional explosive in this case can not exceed 100kg. Can only sink some SAF RSN boats. :D

Will make only a small hole in 50000 tons ships.

Japanese really have tiny dicks! :D:D

Maintaining a 400 KM security envelope round the clock with several combat a/c is a tall order for most a/c carriers. Refueling and turn around becomes logistical headaches.

Ballistic missiles have primary INS ( Inertial nav Sys) as well as secondary SAT guidance systems. At high speeds ( 1000 KM and above) sat nav becomes error prone.

Cruise Missiles use Sat nav effectively as their cruise speed is in that feasible range. Even then, they have INS for correlating inputs.

INS being internal, is jam proof. Most western and possibly Jap technology has RLG - Ring Laser Gyros, which offer high precision.

We can safely assume that the missile has tracking ability. In today's missile regime, that capability is a must. Japan has access to sophisticated military satellites....their own as well as that of USA and acquiring sat based LatLong coordinates should not be an issue for them. Especially that of a huge slow moving sitting duck target like a a/c carrier.

The foto apparently shows it is being slung from a F 16 hardpoint..and that a/c is surely not a slow fighter aircraft.

Japs don't need missiles, they are the masters for Osama Bin Laden's Al Qaeda!

Japs against Chinese? They will be killed on the ground before even have a chance to take to the air.:D

See the last video?

Good job the American shot dead all the survivors in the sea who came from the sunken warship!

Those days the Emperor was God to the Japs. They were willing to do anything for their emperor. But now, I don't think the new generation cares so much for the royalty. The Thais still revere their king. But in future we don't know.

How come those days the Ang Moh never KPKB cry 911?

hahaha...aircraft carriers as a huge ammo and fuel dump have been around since WW2....
If you think a direct hit from a anti-ship missile can blow the carrier to pieces then I seriously suggest that you are misguided and out of depth with naval warfare becuase such things only exist in fantasy.

All this concept about layered defence is nice doctrine...and it does not only cover air threats...but sub-surface threats from submarines.
In today's proliferation of missile technology, it is almost impossible to prevent getting missile hits in a real war scenerio....

Ok as it is new year, let me explain a bit about warship design....
Warships are designed with high degree of survivability.
it may carry a huge amount of ammo and fuel but the risks are spread out as much as possible by simply storing them at different parts of the ships....
Also there are very elaborate fire fighting and suppression and damage control system.
Also all Naval ships are designed with high degree of intact and damage stability by having watertight sub-divisons to minimise loss of stability due to flooding.
If you watch WW2 documentary you will know how much punishments aircraft carriers can take...

Missiles have been around for many years already.
What you can improve and will continue to evolve are:
1. payload - amount ordnance it can carry
2. range
3. accuracy
4. type of ordnance it can carry

But I do not see such a magic anti-ship missile that can blow an aircraft carrier to pieces with a direct hit...unless you are talking about nuclear warheads.

The day that someone invents the guided cruise torpedo (range in excess of maybe 500 hundred km) will be the real end of the aircraft carriers......
