Zhou San’Guo, 31, was sentenced to jail for 4 months for stealing over $30,000 from his employers.

Zhou worked as a manager at Fastfood chain MacDonald’s when he stole the money to repay his debts to loansharks.

The offence happened on May 13 last year at the Bukit Batok East Avenue 4 branch of MacDonald’s.

He was on duty for a night shift and had started work at 5:30pm on May 12. At the start of his shift, he was given float money of $6000 and also cash and change worth $500 from the manager of the previous shift.

Zhou put this money with the restaurant’s earnings for that day into the safe.

He continued his shift but later in the evening, received a call from loansharks that he owed money to who demanded that Zhou pay them back.

Worried, Zhou decided to take the money from the MacDonald’s safes to pay back the loansharks.

He told the other staff members working that evening that they could go home early and he closed up for the night. Then, about an hour later, he returned to the restaurant and took the evening’s earning plus the day’s earnings from the safe and used the money to repay his debts.
He took a total of $30,294.

After stealing the money from MacDonald’s Zhou fled Singapore and went to Malaysia for three months.
However, he was arrested at Woodlands Checkpoint when he attempted to re-enter Singapore on August 15.
