Chants of “freedom” rang out as the group made its way through the streets of the capital during the rally.

There were some unsavoury scenes as the group were confronted by an opposition protest group, who waved the Union Jack.

And while the event was largely peaceful, a police officer was forced to swoop in when a protestor attempted to rip down a Union Jack.

The march had been organised on social media, with 8,000 people confirming they would attend. Some estimates put the crowd size as high as 15,000.

All Under One Banner, the event's organisers, said the march was the biggest ever of its kind.

The Facebook page said: “If you believe in a independent Scotland then you have to attend and together we will show the elite Westminster establishment.

Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon (R) reacts as she leaves the chamber following a vote on the second day of the 'Scotland's Choice' debate on a motion to seek the authority to hold an indpendence referendum at the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh

Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has repeatedly called for a second referendum on Scottish independence prior to Brexit.

She says it is only fair for Scottish voters to be able to choose whether they remain inside the UK and out of the European Union (EU) or remain in the bloc as an independent state.

She said at the SNP election manifesto launch: “Brexit, especially an extreme Brexit, puts all of that at risk.

"That is why I believe so strongly that at the end of the Brexit process, not now but when the terms of the deal are known, Scotland must have a choice about our future.

“A choice between following the UK down the Brexit path or becoming an independent country. Too much is at stake.

"For Brexit simply to be imposed on Scotland, no matter how damaging it may turn out to be, our future must be decided by us, not for us."
