And the price of bak kwa this year is...

Hi johnny333, I have not heard of Happy Gardens in South Edmonton. I live southside. I have heard of Good Buddy but don't find the food that great either. The Golden Rice Bowl was good. I went there once with a couple of older doctors. I think they ordered all the good stuff! But I don't think I will be able to afford to eat there with my family by ourselves.
.

Heard it was started by some ex-UofA FT students
Maybe they moved on to better things or renamed the restaurants :)

When I was in Edmonton ages ago I saw many new fast food places including a Chinese fast food places on 104 st near the high level bridge. In my opinion you can get better Chinese food in Calgary's Chinatown

It's easier to find good Italian food or perogies than "good" Chinese food.

Planning to take the food safety course level 1 & 2 in Feb or March. See if I can find a place to set up shop.

Will you be going to NAIT:confused:
How much is it going to cost? How long is the course? Don't they have some kind of placement program where they'' help students find jobs:confused:

Bee Cheng Hiang Bak Kwa lousy in taste this year, was given a packet just yesterday, ate some.

I don't go all the all to Chinatown just to queue for bak kwa, but if you want to give me...I don't mind:D

They have an outlet in JB, maybe whoever gave it to you got it from there:D

Ah boy ah... Of course there is a difference when you bring in and when companies bring theirs in lah... They have to abide by strict controls and regulations on an industrial scale.

last i remember it was due to the Nipah virus.
but how long is that already?

Outbreaks
Nipah virus was first recognized in 1999 during an outbreak among pig farmers in Malaysia. Since then, there have been another 12 outbreaks, all in South Asia.

Bringing Food into Singapore
No permit is required if small amount of food products are brought in from approved sources for personal consumption

Under Singapore's laws, you are required to obtain a permit from the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) before importing food into the country.

AVA however, recognises that travellers both from Singapore and overseas, may wish to bring certain food items for personal consumption when they travel. The types of food and amounts that can be brought into Singapore from approved sources without a permit are indicated in the table. These quantities are strictly for personal consumption and not for sale. Travellers must be aware of the risks associated with consuming such food items, which have not undergone checks by AVA. Approved sources may change due to health and safety reasons.

With all the foreigner comming to Spore there is a higher chance of the next pandemic coming into Spore on 2 legs, rather than from some barbecued pork.

You just have to wonder what the "authorities" are thinking of:rolleyes:

I heard there was an outbreak of bedbugs recently.

I like beef jerky, which can as expensive as bakkwa. In Australia, there're kangaroo jerky and crocodile jerky too. :D

I've been offered bakkwa occasionally when visiting Chinese friends' homes. Tastes good too, except it looks glossy oily.

I heard there was an outbreak of bedbugs recently.

Where did this happen?
Nothing worse than sharing one's bed with uninivited guests:) Just imagine those bugs crawling over you while you sleep , yuck:eek:

Most of time if you check them in your luggage, there will be no problem.

Did you know that in SF they scan your bags & have sniffer dogs( beagles) looking for illegal foods. I saw many vietnamese, chinese, indians,... being intercepted.

Since the bakwa was roasted I didn't think it would be a problem. When I checked with those inspectors I found out otherwise :(

I understand that Singapore customs have banned bakkwa and other pork products from Malaysia since the Japanese encephalitis outbreak in the mid 90s. At Australia and NZ customs, I understand that all food products, meat or veggie, raw or prepared, are banned.

The Malaysian Bah Kwa taste better...you can't take bak kwa out from JB past SINgapore customs, they confiscate. The one I got came from the shopping mall, near to where I live....

Was lucky the weather in Edmonton was good today. Weather forecast was correct. No snow and just -4 degrees!

Had to dig the BBQ out from the snow! But what an interesting experience BBQing my bak kwa in my backyard with snow all around!

Shiok! CNY will have bak kwa even in Edmonton. I made only 4kg (fridge no space for marinating). Bought the pork from COSTCO CAD$13.

I guess in Singapore 4kg of bak kwa would set you back at least SGD$120!:D:D
