Lee Bon Leong a grassroots leader
Incidentally, many of the lawyer letters from PAP TCs, including the one above, seem to be sent from law firm Lee Bon Leong & Co. The law firm is headed by lawyer Lee Bon Leong, a PBM holder.
According to his law firm website (http://www.lbllaw.com.sg), Mr Lee has been in practice since 1971. He is a member of the Law Society’s Conveyancing Rulings Committee and was also the Law Society’s representative to Lawnet, a committee set up by the government to computerize conveyancing practice. He was also appointed as one of the Law Society’s representatives at the Select Committee Hearing during the revamp of the Land Titles (Strata) Act.
Mr Lee describes himself as being very active in community service. He has served as Chairman of the Tenders and Contracts Committee, and was a member of the Executive Committee of Sembawang Town Council since its inception. He was also the Chairman of the Singapore Lee Clan General Association.
Mr Lee has been a Justice of the Peace since October 1998. He has sat on the Disciplinary Committees of Inquiry (Public Service Commission) from 1 August 2000 as well as the Finance Committee of the Central Singapore Community Development Council.
Business certainly looks good for Mr Lee’s law firm. According to the Letter of Demand above, the resident who defaulted in paying S&CC, also needs to pay $12.85 incurred by Ang Mo Kio TC in sending the lawyer letter.
In 2011, there were 179,071 electors in Ang Mo Kio GRC [Link]. Assuming 4 electors per household, there would be about 44,000 households in Ang Mo Kio GRC. The national norm for S&CC defaults is stated as 3% by MND [Link]. This means, one can expect Ang Mo Kio TC to send out about 1,300 letters of demand every month. If all these letters are sent out by Mr Lee’s law firm, it could rake in about $17,000 a month. And that’s just for 1 TC.
