He had his base in Thailand for many years until the Thai gov kicked him out and ban him from returning to Thai for a year because he overstayed without valid visa. He will be returning to Thailand after the ban.

Almost all kopitiams of today are more or less food courts with cheaper interior decor, that's all.
Equal partitions, tables fixed to the floor.
One of the last 'authentic' kopitiams was the Hin Hollywood Canteen, but of course they had to demolish it and build a crappy mall.

Most people do not have a life, not to talk about nightlife.
When young, they spend their nights/ weekends doing homework/ going for tuition.
When adults they work their asses off to pay their crazy mortgage while trembling in fear that a foreigner will steal their lunch. Entertainment is queuing up 2.5 hours for A&W
When old they have almost nothing left and must collect cardboards for exercise.
