Two men have been arrested for selling fake gold items to the elderly.
According to Channel NewsAsia, both men are believed to be part of a foreign association that runs the scam.
Their activities were monitored by the Bedok Police Division and Police Intelligence Department after they were alerted to the association’s presence on 2 January 2013.
A member of the group would first contact the elderly and claim to be a distant relative.
After gaining their trust, the men would claim to be construction workers who had come across an urn containing items like gold, old currencies, wills and worksite letters.
The victims were then persuaded to buy the fake items, after being given chipped-off samples of the items to verify its authenticity.
Working with a potential victim, the police arrested the two suspects, aged 41 and 45, at Bishan on 6 January.
The suspects had tried to sell the victim fake gold ingots and old coins.
Their hotel room in Geylang was also raided and 105 fake ingots, laughing Buddha statues, old notes and coins, mobile phones and, an old will were retrieved.
Several publications belonging to clans and associations in Singapore were also discovered and the contact numbers of potential victims were obtained by the syndicate via these publications, Channel NewsAsia reported.
Police believe that the suspects are linked to the same association, where four men were arrested, for a similar scam in December 2011.
The two men will be appear in court on 8 January and if convicted, could be imprisoned for up to 10 years and fined.
