RECIFE, Brazil – Search ships methodically worked through debris from a doomed Air France jet Sunday, recovering 15 more bodies near the spot where the Airbus A330 is believed to have gone down a week ago.

Two bodies were recovered Saturday, and Brazilian and French ships picked up the others on Sunday after pilots participating in a grid search reported additional sightings. The bodies have been found in an area about 45 miles (70 kilometers) from where the jet sent out messages signaling electrical failures and loss of cabin pressure.

"We're navigating through a sea of debris," Brazilian Navy Capt. Giucemar Tabosa Cardoso said.

Brazil's military was not releasing detailed information about bodies or debris that have been spotted from the air but not taken aboard ships, after it was criticized last week for mistakenly identifying sea trash as a cargo pallet from the plane.

Flight 447 disappeared and likely broke up in midair in turbulent weather May 31 during a flight from Rio de Janeiro to Paris with 228 people aboard — all now presumed dead.

The investigation is increasingly focused on whether external instruments on the Airbus A330 may have iced over, confusing speed sensors and leading computers to set the plane's speed too fast or slow — a potentially deadly mistake.

The French agency investigating the disaster said airspeed instruments on the plane had not been replaced as the maker had recommended, but cautioned that it was too early to draw conclusions about what role that may have played in the crash.

The agency, BEA, said the plane received inconsistent airspeed readings from different instruments as it struggled in a massive thunderstorm.

France is leading the investigation into the cause and will try to recover the plane's black box data and voice recorders, which could reveal why the jet crashed. Brazilian officials are focusing solely on the recovery of victims and plane wreckage.

In Brazil, Air Force Col. Henry Munhoz said nine bodies have been recovered by Brazilian authorities: four men, four women and one that was impossible to identify by gender. He said he did not have information about the genders of the eight bodies recovered by French military helicopters that were transferred to a French ship.

The search is focusing on several hundred square miles (square kilometers) roughly 400 miles (640 kilometers) northeast of the Fernando de Noronha islands off Brazil's northern coast — where Air France Flight 447 emitted its last signals.

Munhoz and Cardoso declined comment on the condition of the recovered bodies, saying that information would be too emotionally painful for relatives.

Authorities also announced that searchers spotted two airplane seats, debris with Air France's logo, and recovered dozens of structural components from the plane. They had already recovered jet wing fragments.

Munhoz said there is "no more doubt" that the wreckage is from Flight 447.

Hundreds of personal items belonging to the passengers have been recovered, but Munhoz said authorities would not immediately identify them. Relatives of the victims were devastated by an announcement Saturday that a laptop computer and briefcase containing a plane ticket had been found.

"We don't want to cause them more suffering," Munhoz said.

The bodies and plane wreckage were being transported by Brazilian and French ships and should arrive Tuesday at the Fernando de Noronha islands, where the military has set up a staging post for the search operation. From there, remains and debris will be taken to the northeastern coastal city of Recife for identification.

Munhoz would not say Sunday how far apart the bodies had been found. He referred questions to French authorities on whether the locations of the bodies could help determine whether the plane broke up in the air.

Meanwhile, friends and family remembered geologist Michael Prince Harris and his wife, Anne Debaillon Harris — the only U.S. citizens on the plane — in a memorial service Sunday in Lafayette, Louisiana.

The couple had lived in Lafayette before moving to Houston and then Brazil.

The Pentagon has said there are no signs of terrorism. Brazil's defense minister said the possibility was never considered. French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner agreed that there is no evidence supporting a "terrorism theory," but said "we cannot discard that for now."

The U.S. Navy is sending two high-tech devices to French ships that will help them locate the black boxes, Pentagon spokesman Navy Cmdr. Jeffrey Gordon said Sunday.

The Towed Pinger Locators, which can detect emergency beacons to a depth of 20,000 feet (6,100 meters), are being flown to Brazil on Monday with a U.S. Navy team.

The team will deliver the locators to two French tugs that will use them to listen for transmissions from the black box.

France has appointed Foreign Ministry official Pierre-Jean Vandoorne to act as ambassador to families of the crash victims, the French prime minister's office said in a statement Sunday.

Where evidence showed up and SIA idiots still blindly suck on to Ang Moh. They can insist that planes that broke apart in the air in a storm are SAFE for flying.

Singapore Airlines says Airbus A330 is a safe plane

Reuters
Reuters - Monday, June 8

KUALA LUMPUR, June 7 - Singapore Airlines will honour all existing contracts for plane orders, its CEO said on Sunday. Chew Choon Seng also told Reuters on the sidelines of an aviation meeting in Kuala Lumpur that the Airbus A330 was a good plane.

"We should not jump to conclusions," he said, referring to the crash of an Airbus A330-200 in the Atlantic Ocean on Monday, the world's deadliest air disaster since 2001.

"It's a safe plane, it's a good plane."

As of March, Singapore Airlines had orders for 16 A330-200s and for 33 other Airbus planes.

With corpses scattered apart in an area so huge, the plane was surely not in a single piece itself when it came down. It must had broken apart in the air before hitting ocean.

I think its unfair to proclaim that the aircraft is unsafe just because of 1 air crash. Its as good as claiming that all Honda Civi for example is unsafe cause someone got into an accident with it. Its better to wait for the investigation into the matter first before any conclusion is drawn.

hello, there was a storm in the area for days.

According to available data including flight plan. The AFR447 had a chance to avoid the storm, but the pilots did not try to avoid. It was flying too low as well.

The flight plan of AFR447:

flightplan.gif

The storm ahead as shown in this meteorological analysis, using METEOSAT-9 satellite images showed that if aircraft diverted towards west side and took a longer route, it need not fly into the storm.

meteosat_flight.jpg

The points marked INTOL SALPU ORARO TASIL are navigational points given in AFR447's flight plan. Could be names radio navigational buoys in the ocean.

This image showed that AFR447 was flying lower than the storm which reached 55,000ft while AFR447 was only flying around 35,000ft. If it was taking 50,000ft altitude most of the storm would be BELOW it.

af447-profile.jpg

There are alternative flight routes that AFR447 could had taken, e.g. UN866 or UN857, but it was on UN873(yellow highlighted), which was fatally straight into that storm. Showed by this navigational map:

af447-route.jpg

Navigational points with names and coordinates are on the map.

According to available data including flight plan. The AFR447 had a chance to avoid the storm, but the pilots did not try to avoid. It was flying too low as well.

hello, the modern passenger jet cannot fly so high above that storm.

the plane cannot anyhow divert too much from the designated route.
the storm was huge.

I think its unfair to proclaim that the aircraft is unsafe just because of 1 air crash. Its as good as claiming that all Honda Civi for example is unsafe cause someone got into an accident with it. Its better to wait for the investigation into the matter first before any conclusion is drawn.

It is also unfair and unwise to proclaim the aircraft as safe at the moment.

there is a great diff btn broke apart and crash. imagine driving on the highway and the engine, wheels, etc came off. still safe??

air travel is safer than car travel.

maybe boeing is slightly safer than airbus.

boeing is build by USA and Japan

airbus is build by French, UK, spain, Germany. All speaker different language, the French, spainese, german and english.

Then they tried to put the plane together.

while boeing is just english and japanese (but japs are famous for reliability)
french and spainese is not so famous for reliability, look at their car,
one of the world most unreliable car you can find in first world country.

Frankly speaking there are 1021 A330 planes in service with a total of 9 incidents and 4 crashes(of which 1 by Anti Aircraft fire, 1 due to lack of fuel)

So 4 crashes out of 1021 planes represents a 0.39% failure rate. I don't think we can call that unsafe either. In which case there is currently no official report to stated that the plane broke apart in midair and dropping from that kind of altitude, a plane hitting the water would be the same as hitting concrete so breaking into pieces upon impact shouldn't come as a surprise. In fact. we should be surprise if it isn't. I'm not saying it didn't break apart in midair, wont be the first plane to have broken into pieces if it did but I prefer to leave my comments until the official investigation on this is over rather then come up with random speculations

Was it right to declare that the plane as unsafe, my stand is a big No until the official report comes out and state otherwise. As for SIA coming out with comment that the Plane is safe, its pretty obvious that its simply to justify the honoring of the contracts to purchase new planes. Whether it is really safe or not, like I said, lets wait for the reports before we declare anything here.

wait for what reports, no one will know what happen, it might be inconclusive after 10 years of investigation.

Whether or not they find the entire fuselage of the plane, an investigation will still take place base on whatever pieces of wreckage recovered, existing communication records between the plane and whoever was listening to it and also weather conditions. I think its far better to draw conclusions from that report even if its inconclusive rather then base our judgement from something we created out of thin air

Very good example you gave.

If Honda Civic broke apart into pieces when driven in a storm, and bits & pieces are everywhere and need days to search and recover.

Will you then still say Honda Civic was safe then?

Airbus already advised Air France to replace the air speed instrument because of a known icing risk that will cause autopilot to be shut down. And this is an issue with Airbus & Air France actually. Why Airbus got such a faulty and unsafe device on the A330?

hello, there was a storm in the area for days.

So what?

Storm so what? Storm are very common and happens daily everywhere. Does that means that planes are supposed break apart in the air everyday and everywhere?

Storm SO WHAT?

Either aircraft are to be built storm-safe or pilots are to be fully aware of storm and take avoidance 100%. There is no excuse at all.

Even for cars it is the same, either cars are made capable of handling storms, or radio to warn drivers to stop or avoid them, storm warnings and forecasts are to be issued ahead of time.

That's all.

Storm SO WHAT?

I had been flying in storm and blizzards for many times. Either they get me there with a rough ride, or my flight got diverted to longer route (few times), or diverted me to a different airport for landing and caused me delay (once), or canceled the flight and never took off (left me at the airport waiting for hours, 3 times). And the airlines announced to inform me of bad weather. I never get crashed into pieces, no one need to be crashed to death.
