http://news.asiaone.com/news/singap...er-national-shooter-speaks-against-xenophobia

In less than a week, the 21-year-old champion has returned home to a hero's welcome, and was given a standing ovation in Parliament. But the media frenzy over Schooling has once again sparked the debate of local versus foreign talent in Singapore sport.

Former national shooter and Raffles Girls' School student Zhang Jingna said on her Facebook page that the negativity was making her "sick".

Now a multi-award-winning fashion photographer based in New York, Zhang was born in Beijing and moved to Singapore at a young age.

Once named Sports Girl of the Year in 2006, Zhang said in a Aug 16 post that she had endured xenophobic insults growing up as a foreign-born child in Singapore.

"I thought the xenophobia I experienced as a child was just a number out of a pool of random experiences. Surely, I would grow up to be in better company than the strangers who told me I was about the same as sh*t, or that I would always be of the lowest classes of citizens compared to local-born Singaporeans. I was wrong.

"The hating on foreign nationals on my feed has reached a point where I am beginning to feel sick. To realise that some of these people are ones that I had once worked with makes it all the more painful," she said.

In a lengthy post, Zhang addresses some of the comments she had come across on Facebook in recent times.

Among these comments are netizens' calls for the Government to spend more money training and cultivating local athletes.

While acknowledging Joseph Schooling's "incredible" success, she points out that "it is of course easy to say all of these after he has already achieved what he has. But it doesn't always start and end like this". Some local-born athletes on scholarships overseas choose to never return, she says.

"If, for example, Joseph was indeed sent to the US on Singapore's dime and a) didn't win, b) never came back, or c) quit. I bet a lot of people would change their tune, and blame the Government for wasting money on a Singaporean who wasn't trained on Singapore soil, by Singaporean coaches," she adds.

Besides, it is difficult to groom young sportsmen in an academic-driven society like Singapore, Zhang points out.

Regarding those "purist" arguments that Singaporeans should not support athletes born in other countries, Zhang writes: "I sure hope your grandparents and theirs don't hear you saying this. It's heartbreaking."

"We all came from somewhere, we all benefited from the immigrants that our parents, grandparents and forefathers were. So let's stay civilised and not use racist and discriminatory words like 'purist'."

She also wonders if the treatment regarding Schooling's success would be different if he was not born in Singapore.

Lots of Ah Tiong do that ...use sinkapore as a stepping stone to head to the West.

How many? We know of notables Ah Tiong turned sinkees who returned to China after getting the reward money.
More money is spent on these Ah Tiongs than locals.
When favour is shown towards foreigners, off course sinkees get upset lah.

I agree with the PRC in some way,how can sinkies be so pragmatic when it comes to career choices and what to study, yet be so illogical at the same time when it comes to voting day and throwing money at sg pools and worshipping ah gong and burning kim zhua.

My only regret in life is singapore is not xenophobic enough, xenophobia is a western construct, this prc hooker has no right to talk about it.how dare she call sinkapore xenophobic when China and japan has less than 3% foreigners?china and india is probably more racist then anybody they just havent realised it yet.

Very funny. Give so many foreigners scholarships at the expense of locals and yet they complain Sporeans xenophobic. But Sporeans only 1 out of millions can get swimming scholarship from foreigners. Most can only give and take nothing in reverse when in foreign country. And that's when these foreigners in other countries are really xenophobic as they take everything yet give you nothing and even can harm you in all shameless ways.

Singaporeans illogical? Not xenophobic enough? huh?

The first thing that comes out of a typical Singaporean’s mouth when he lands in a western country is “ Hey friend, are the angmohs racist against us asians or not?”

These are the same Singaporeans who have no qualm showing bitterness, anger, racism, jealousy, xenophobic fear against foreigners in their own land.

Foreigners take their jobs, have priority bla bla bla.. and yet make plans to migrate out of Singapore and head to places like USA, Canada and Australia. Those who make it to these countries then complain that there is racism when they don’t get the high profile jobs which they THNK they DESERVE because they have a degree or basically think they are so much better than the stupid/lazy angmohs. In the meantime, they buy up all the prime district houses and make them into ethnic enclaves.

They put their deadpan and sour faced kids to private schools. These kids spend all hours having tuition and ace their exams, get education scholarships/bursaries leaving the stupid, lazy angmohs far behind them. When the angmohs complain that the farking asians do not integrate or take all the good spots in the university (eg. In engg, dentistry, medicine, accountancy), these asians retort back saying that angmohs are lazy and the country is successful because of the hard working asians. Hmmm……the nerve these migrants have! ;-)

You see, the Singaporeans think they have this God given right to be at the top of the heap. Unfortunately, this distinct behaviour has been entrenched over the decades by the policies of the PAP Government who claimed that the country can be only successful if it’s dominated by the majority race (guess what race, har).

In the 70s to late 90s, did you hear much rumbling from the majority race? No…they were perched at the top, had all the good plump jobs at the expense of the meek and “lazy” minorities (i.e Malays, Indians and Eurasians). The constant reinforcement was that the country can only succeed if it was Chinese majority. To make the hurdle even higher, companies introduced the requirement of Mandarin in the working environment. That pushed the minorities to the fringes of working in factories, government jobs and service industries. The cream high paying jobs were all dominated by the majority.

Now that Singapore is swamped at all level with aggressive Ah Tiongs and Anneh, the Singaporean chinese are at a loss. It doesn’t help now that educated local Malays and Indians are now equally aggressive. Throw in the pinoys at the bottom level and the result is interesting. ;-)

The clock has already been set in motion. Singaporeans can whinge and moan all they want. The smart, mobile ones will head anywhere overseas wherever there are opportunities.

For those who plan to remain in Singapore and for the future of your generation, I strongly suggest the following:-

1. If you have a son, try exposing him to toys (e.g. bob the builder/construction toys/toy lorries). Buy him a hardhat, toy changkul, safety rubber boots etc. Get him used to the concept of working and toiling as construction laborer. He might one day look for jobs as a laborer in some shitty 3rd world country. Or get him to collect toy cars (especially TAXIS). Give him the opportunity of fulfilling his childhood dream of driving a taxi.

2. If you have a daughter, get her to go for dance classes. It is important that she stays healthy and fit. Get her enrolled in this sport, Pole Dancing. Educate her that SPG is not connected to MSG. It is a badge of honor in being chosen by the expatriates to be their LBFM (don’t know what is that….google it). Want overseas experience? They can venture out to Dubai, Macau….or anywhere there are casinos and you know what. Take them for educational/skills enhancement tours in Bangkok, Manila and see how their fellow sisters egg out a living. For others, you can train them up for hands on work. You never know, one day they can work as an Au-pair (maid) in Philipines, Myanmar, Indonesia etc.

3. For remaining losers (adult ones) …well there is the SBF to act out your xenophobic fantasies (delusional masturbation). And every 4 years do what you are always good at i.e. voting in the same party that screws you over and over again.

If I were an immigrant in an angmo country, I would assimilate.

Our complaints of foreigners are totally legitimate ...which government give preferential treatment to foreigners in their country? Only sinkapore. Why? Only god and the dead conman knows.
If something similar happen in the West, there would be bloodshed and the government toss out long ago.

There is hope for sinkapore ...if we toss out the PAP before the end of this decade.
