SINGAPORE — When a passer-by asked Philip Ong Guo Xiong why he and his wife were taking photos of the sky, Ong said that something there looked like "Guan Yin Ma", the Chinese goddess of mercy.
Five minutes later, when the other man failed to see anything resembling the deity, he accused Ong of being a scammer. Ong then shoved him to the ground.
Separately, Ong assaulted his spouse on various occasions, once by splashing hot water on her because he thought that she had called him an “Ah gua” — Hokkien slang for transvestite.
Ong, 34, was jailed for 11 months and two weeks on Tuesday (Sept 27) for his actions. His jail term was backdated to June 3 when he was arrested and remanded.
He pleaded guilty to five charges that included breaching a personal protection order that his 34-year-old wife had against him, voluntarily causing hurt, and causing hurt by a rash act.
This was not his first brush with the law, the court heard. He was sentenced to six months’ jail in May last year for offences such as similarly breaching a personal protection order.
WHAT HAPPENED
The court heard that shortly after his release from prison last year, Ong and his wife went to meet a social worker on the afternoon of Sept 28 at Block 206 Bedok North Street 1.
While taking a smoke break in front of the Social Service Office@Bedok North, they began taking pictures of the sky because they heard that there was something in the sky resembling "Guan Yin Ma". The deity is also known as Guan Yin.
When they were discussing what they had allegedly seen, a 62-year-old man suddenly asked what they were doing. He then began taking pictures of the sky after Ong replied him.
However, when the man could not see anything resembling Guan Yin in the sky or in his own photos, he confronted Ong, accused Ong of being a scammer and began taking photos of the couple.
Ong asked him to stop and delete the pictures, but the victim refused and challenged him to the fight. The victim also threatened to get people to beat up Ong and his wife if they were to step foot in the vicinity of Geylang Lorong 20.
Ong then shoved the victim and kicked his knee, causing him to lose his balance and fall against a stone bench.
Another passer-by witnessed the incident and reported it to the police.
Some months passed before Ong grew angry in public after misplacing his TraceTogether token that was used for contact-tracing during the Covid-19 pandemic. His wife tried to calm him down to no avail.
In his agitation and anger, Ong picked up a safety traffic cone and threw it at a nearby pillar in anger.
The cone then ricocheted and struck a 37-year-old housewife’s arm while she was at a pedestrian crossing near Bedok Point mall with her husband and young daughter.
On May 28, Ong punched his wife’s eye. He was upset at her for oversleeping after taking some medication.
He later splashed hot liquid on her and admitted that he was angry because she called him an “Ah gua”. She denied doing that, reminding him that she had been asleep, and he apologised.
A few days later on June 2, they were arguing over how to split S$500 in government financial aid that they had received when he punched her again.
For voluntarily causing hurt, Ong could have been fined up to S$5,000 or jailed for up to three years, or both.
