The aging of our population is the result of a long-term decline in fertility rates and significant improvement in life expectancy. The number of elderly Singaporeans will triple to 900,000 by 2030. To compound matters, they will be supported by a relatively small base of working-age citizens as there will be a mere 2.1 citizens of working-age for each S'porean aged 65 and above. With less young adults entering the workforce, and many starting on their careers at a later age owing to tertiary and studies, employers need to shift away from discriminatory practices against older workers.
