Magnitude 6.2 earthquake shakes Fukushima Prefecture, felt in Tokyo

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 and a lower 5 on the Japanese intensity scale hit off Fukushima Prefecture on Sunday evening, the Meteorological Agency said.

The epicenter of the quake, which occurred at around 7:23 p.m. at a depth of about 50 kilometers (30 miles), was offshore, the agency said.



No tsunami warning was issued.

There were no immediate reports of major damage or of any casualties, according to authorities.

Fukushima Prefecture is home to the crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant.

No abnormalities were found at nuclear power stations in the region, including both the Fukushima No. 1 and No. 2 plants, according to their operators.

The quake registered lower 5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 in Futaba in Fukushima Prefecture and at Ishinomaki and Watari, which are both in Miyagi Prefecture, according to the weather agency.

The strong quake was also felt in Tokyo, about 250 km away, where it shook buildings. There, the quake measured 3 on the intensity scale.

A 6.2 magnitude earthquake has hit off Fukushima in Japan.

It was also felt in the capital Tokyo, some 250km away.

The epicentre of the earthquake, which struck at 7.23pm local time, was off the coast of Fukushima prefecture and measured at a depth of 50km, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.



There were no were immediate reports of damage, and no tsunami alert was issued.

Public broadcaster NHK TV reported that utility companies were checking on the nuclear reactors in the area.

In 2011, a massive 9.0-magnitude earthquake and tsunami triggered a nuclear accident in Fukushima.

At least 15,000 people were killed in that earthquake and tsunami, and the nuclear disaster was the worst since the 1986 Chernobyl reactor disaster.

Earthquakes are common in Japan, one of the world's most seismically active areas. Japan accounts for about 20 per cent of the world's earthquakes of magnitude 6 or greater.

Xinhua News Agency, Tokyo, August 4 (Reporter Guo Dan) A 6.2-magnitude earthquake occurred on the evening of 4th in the offshore waters of Fukushima, Japan. There are currently no reports of casualties and property damage.


According to the news released by the Japan Meteorological Agency, the earthquake occurred at 19:23 local time on the 4th (Beijing time 18:23), the epicenter was located at 37.42 degrees north latitude, 141.42 degrees east longitude, and the focal depth was 50 kilometers.
