Sears Holding Co. says it will close dozens of more stores across the U.S. after the upcoming holidays.

The company announced the latest list of Sears and Kmart stores closing, affecting 63 locations in January 2018. None of the locations are in New York state.

"We will continue to close some unprofitable stores as we transform our business model so that our physical store footprint and our digital capabilities match the needs and preferences of our members," a company spokesperson said Thursday in a statement. "It's important to note that these stores will remain open to serve members during the holiday season."

According to AL.com, eligible employees will receive severance pay and have the opportunity to apply for open positions at other stores.

Tribune Media reports Sears Holdings, which recently split from Whirlpool after 100-year partnership, hasn't turned a profit since 2010 and has warned it may be unable to stay in business. The latest closures bring the list of Sears stores in the U.S. to about 680 and Kmart locations to about 610; parent company Sears Holdings had three times as many -- 3,400 total stores -- in 2006.

This past year, the company closed Kmarts in Clay and New Hartford and Sears in Cheektowaga and Amherst, near Buffalo. There is still a Kmart in Mattydale and Sears stores in DeWitt and Clay.

(Reuters) - Sears Holdings Corp (SHLD.O) said it will close 63 additional stores in the United States after the holiday season as part of its continued effort to return to profitability in a difficult retail environment.

The announcement, made to employees on Thursday and available on the company’s website, follows news last month that Whirlpool Corp (WHR.N) would stop supplying some big name-brand appliances to Sears, and a fresh cash infusion from Chief Executive Edward Lampert.

The closures, set for late January, include 45 Kmart stores and 18 Sears stores and follow 330 closures in 2017. (bit.Iy/2iZ1VZ1)

The move will reduce the number of locations operated by Sears, once the largest U.S. department store chain, to around 1,000, from 2,019 stores in 2012.

Liquidation sales at the closing stores will begin as early as Nov. 9, Sears said.

Shares in Sears, which have lost 54 percent over the past year, ended 4.8 percent lower on Friday at $5.17.
