SINGAPORE — A 61-year-old man was found dead in his third-story apartment at Block 510, Ang Mo Kio Avenue 8, marking yet another case of solitary death in Singapore this year.
The deceased, whose identity has not been publicly released, was discovered motionless inside his unit on the morning of Friday, July 17, 2026.
A Routine Broken
Known to his neighbors by the nickname “Fatso” due to his long-standing struggle with obesity, the man was a creature of habit. Every morning between 5:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m., he would light incense at his home before riding his personal mobility vehicle (PMV) to the nearest coffee shop. His regular order was a simple breakfast of Kopi-O and two eggs—a choice he maintained for years in an effort to manage his weight and deteriorating mobility.
However, concerns arose when his usual routine ground to a halt. Neighbors noticed he had not been seen for a week, and the familiar scent of his daily incense was missing.
Uncollected Meals Raise Alarm
Living alone in the same Ang Mo Kio flat for the past 30 to 40 years, the man had a limited support system. He was never married, had no children, and lived a highly isolated life. Although he was the seventh of eight siblings, he rarely kept in touch with his family, with his brothers and sisters reporting that they had not seen him in four to five years. His only recent contact with his elder brother was occasionally asking for financial loans.
Having previously worked in pest control and as a cleaner, severe health issues eventually forced him out of the workforce, leaving him unemployed in recent years.
Because of his condition, social services had arranged for daily food boxes to be delivered to his apartment. The alarm was finally raised when multiple meals were left outside his door uncollected. A social worker initially thought nothing of the piled-up boxes until a foul odor began emanating from the unit.
Discovery
The authorities were notified at around 9:00 a.m. on July 17. Upon entering the flat, police officers found the 61-year-old man motionless. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
This tragic discovery marks the 23rd reported case of a solitary death in Singapore in 2026, highlighting the ongoing and silent crisis of isolation among the elderly and vulnerable within the community.
