All-new faces were seen at a PAP event at the Aljunied GRC and Hougang SMC.
Yesterday, an event specifically for senior citizens was held there.
Speaker of Parliament Halimah Yacob was the guest-of-honour. Former members of parliament Lim Boon Heng and Zainul Abidin Rasheed were also there.
Mr Zainul was part of the team which ran in the Aljunied GRC and lost to the Worker’s Party.
Six of the new faces who might run in Aljunied and Hougang for the upcoming general election were also present.
They are banker Chua Eng Leong, chairman of Eunos PAP branch, Paya Lebar chairman lawyer K Muralidharan Pillai, Serangoon chairman businessman Chan Hui Yuh, Bedok Reservoir-Punggol chairman Victor Lye and Kaki Bukit chairman Kahar Hassan.
Mr Chua is the son of an ex-PAP minister. He had told reporters, “All good parents don't want their children to enter the family field. As a parent, I wouldn't like my own son to be in the position where people try to discredit you, make up lies about you.”
Mr Kahar replaced Ong Ye Kung as the chairman. Mr Ong also stood at the last general election at Aljunied and lost.
When asked earlier if he would stand for election, Mr Kahar said, “As long as the community benefits from my efforts, I am happy to serve in any capacity.”
Of the PAP, Ms Chan had said, “"I believe in the party's values, and there are many ways to serve. If (party leaders) decide to put me in that position, I would definitely do my best.”
PAP’s Hougang chairman Lee Hong Chuang who has replaced Desmond Choo, the previous loser at Hougang, was also present.
The signs are that the PAP has given up hope on regaining the seats at Aljunied and Hougang and have decided to send in a death squad, made up of only branch chairmen at the constituencies.
Mr Ong has been sent over to the Sembawang GRC. It looks like the PAP is hoping to give him a straight ticket into parliament. However, Mr Ong faces serious challenge from the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP), which has been building up its image and has been making good inroads there.
SDP has also been working the ground in Sembawang prior to the 2006 general election while Mr Ong was only recently parachuted into Sembawang in July.
Rumours are also that Minister for Social and Family Development and Second Minister for Defence Chan Chun Sing might also be shifted into the Sembawang GRC to helm it. It is unclear if Sembawang residents will take kindly to Mr Chan who has made several gaffes since becoming a minister, having said that he would not define a poverty line due to a “cliff effect”.
Previous foreign minister George Yeo has stopped his involvement in Aljunied since losing at the last general election and has been jet-setting to Hong Kong and the Vatican, recently having been appointed on the Vatican's new Council for the Economy.
A clearly happier and more relieved Mr Yeo said that he was "greatly honoured" by the appointment.
Mr Lim said that the PAP does not yet know if it would field the six chairman as part of the suicide squad to run against the Worker’s Party, but hopes that they can be close to the residents.
