SINGAPORE - Police have arrested a 57-year-old man for stealing bicycles and drug offences. He was sentenced to five years corrective training in March 2014.

Between October and November 2013, the accused stole a total of nine bicycles from Botanic Gardens MRT Station and private housing estates along Cluny Park Road, Coronation Road, Binjai Park and Dunearn Road.

Most of the stolen bicycles cost more than $600, the police said in a media statement.

The accused would use a metal cutter to cut the cable locks used to secure the bicycles. He would then ride off on the stolen bicycle and sell it on the same day.

He was arrested by police officers red-handed while he was in the act of stealing a bicycle secured at Botanic Gardens MRT station.

The police said that they would like to take this opportunity to remind the public that the offence of theft is a serious one. Those found guilty may be imprisoned for up to three years, fined or both.

Bicycle owners are advised to adopt the following crime prevention measures:

a) Keep your bicycle inside your home when you are not using it. When parking your bicycle at a public place, park at a designated bicycle parking bay.

Indiscriminate parking may result in enforcement actions being taken by relevant agencies;

b) Lock your bicycle to a fixed permanent structure such as a bicycle rack that is anchored to the ground or wall.

It should be locked in a well-lit area where there is high human traffic.

c) Lock your bicycle when it is left unattended, even if it is only for a short while. All removable bicycle components should also be secured;

d) Use a durable lock. You can consider using a U-lock that provides better security, complemented with a cable lock or a bicycle lock with an alarm feature.

e) Make unique permanent identification marks such as engravings, or affix a Bicycle Security Label on your bicycle.

The Bicycle Security Label comes with a unique serial number that helps you and the police identify your bicycle if it is stolen.

You can approach any Neighbourhood Police Centre (NPC) with your bicycle to collect the Bicycle Security Label.
