SINGAPORE — About 500 staff at HGST Singapore, a Western Digital company, have been retrenched today (Dec 27), following plans to enhance competitiveness and reduce workforce.

In a statement, Executive Secretary of United Workers of Electronics & Electrical Industries (UWEEI) Heng Chee How said the union was informed by HGST in early November this year of their plans to reduce their workforce.
Mr Heng said UWEEI is saddened by this retrenchment exercise but understood that the company faces keen challenges to maintain cost competitiveness.

He said HGST has committed to UWEEI to ensure fair compensation and treatment for the affected employees.

Mr Heng added that HGST will extend hospitalisation and surgical insurance coverage in Singapore and pay union membership dues for three months till March next year so that the workers will continue to receive benefits.

UWEEI and the Employment and Employability Institute (e2i) will be organising a targeted job fair on Jan 16 at the institute for the affected workers.

The union also said its officers were present at the company during the retrenchment exercise to provide counselling and to sign up affected workers for the job fair.

UWEEI said it will work closely with HGST to ensure that the affected workers are treated fairly and will try its best to render all possible assistance, and help train and place the affected employees in new jobs. CHANNEL NEWSASIA

What's the breakdown on those retrenched? How many are locals?

And Heng Chee How will still have a job. The 500 is just the beginning. HCH will have lots more ops to show understanding. To employers....

50% are sinkies!! Don't make sense. I thought priority should go to foreigners.

Up to the 1980's, the unionists will fight for the rights & benefits for the workers, from then on...UNIONS are useless in SINgapore, they collect fees from the workers, are nothing but a entertainment & recreation club.

Waste your time, joining one....

Upturn the downturn.

it's a sunset industry. manufacturing will be moved to thailand where cost is lower. the bleeding of the 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch hdd business is rampant with the decline of the microshit, intel, hsgt-wd, seagate alliance of laptop and pc supply chain and their ecosystem.
