Singapore - 300 metric tonnes of hydrochloric acid leaked from a chemical processing plant in Jalan Samulun - West of Singapore - yesterday morning.

Acid leaked from a damaged tank owned by Chemical Industry Far East Limited. However, the leakage was confined to the bund walls enclosing the plant.

When contacted, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) told AsiaOne that no one was injured in the incident.

The SCDF set up ground monitors and used water to neutralise the vapour and dilute the leakage. The remnants of the leakage has since been pumped into an empty storage tank.

Three fire engines, two fire bikes and five support appliances, including a Hazardous Material (HazMat) team, were deployed to handle the situation.

Further investigation by the NEA revealed that there was no hydrochloric acid fumes detected beyond the company premises during the incident.

In an email to citizen journalism website STOMP, a witness, 'Jim', said he saw what looked like an explosion happen at the scene.

"There was an explosion and fire incident occurred at the West side of Singapore at a chemical processing plants in the morning yesterday (Feb 12)."

He also said that "Some chemical leaked into drain as well."

However, the SCDF spokesperson was unable to confirm whether an explosion had occurred or whether it was an explosion that caused the leakage.

When contacted, the National Environment Agency acknowledged the incident and said that further details will be released pending the completion of investigations.

Re: 300 tonnes of hydrocholoric acid leaked in Singapore

Try to con peasant no leak beyond company premise. As I know the leak when into the sea. Please dont go swiming and fishing for at least one month in Singapore sea/water.

fuck...now you know why Jurong West / Boon Lay considered the armpit of Singapore ...no one wants to stay there.

Hey, NEA - is our water catchment area contaminated by HCL?

And with the fumes...are we going to get acid rain anytime soon? Then I better not venture out..LOL

Or will our neighbors in Sumatra kenna acid rain? They send us haze, we give them acid rain...LOL

He also said that "Some chemical leaked into drain as well."

If our New Water taste different, you know why lah...

Re: 300 tonnes of hydrocholoric acid leaked in Singapore

I remembered from my chemistry lessons...

HCL + NaOH = NaCL + H2O

bagus.

add lots of Sodium Hydroxide becomes sodium chloride (salt) and water...

PAP government is considering (actually decided already?) to have nuclear powered plants in the near future!!!

does Chemical Industry Far East Limited have to pay SCDF for the help given?

Look at the picture and people should be informed of this.

Concentrated hydrochloric acid (fuming hydrochloric acid) forms acidic mists. Both the mist and the solution have a corrosive effect on human tissue, with the potential to damage respiratory organs, eyes, skin, and intestines. Upon mixing hydrochloric acid with common oxidizing chemicals, such as sodium hypochlorite (bleach, NaClO) or potassium permanganate (KMnO4), the toxic gas chlorine is produced.

The dispensible low life around there can grow sick, there is always JB to get cheaper medical care. Die also no problem, easily replacable by more immigrants.

But PLEASE:mad: dont affect the business investors and cause them any liabilities.
