Obviously they were lamenting about 'too much democracy' so as to not antagonise their PRC readers. I think there's a substantial number of them living in Singapore, so much so that the Chinese newspapers have entire pages dedicated to news from mainland China, listed by province. Not major world news but trivial ones e.g. a botched plastic surgery, a quirky wedding ceremony etc.
