What a lousy analogy. Old man obviously doesn't know much about computers.

I will say the "blank" motherboard, with the "empty" PCI, AGP, memory slots and unplugged AGP and various peripheral connectors, is Singapore. The CPU that is mounted on the mobo are the wonderful FTs. The diligent and resourceful migrant workers are the DRAMS, graphic cards, bridges, BIOS, heat sinks, etc on the mobo. Working together, they help the computer to churn along nicely as a whole.

As for Sinkies, they are the dustballs in the computer. They do nothing but choked up the performance of the entire motherboard and computer.

Ex-GIC chief economist, Lam Keong Yeoh, has expressed disappointment that Finance Minister and presumptive 4G Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat cited former chief planner Liu Thai Ker’s “outdated” 10 million population argument at a university forum recently.

Speaking to 700 students at a ministerial dialogue at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) last week, Mr Heng cited Liu Thai Ker’s views that Singapore should plan for a 10 million population, as he asserted that the projected population of 6.9 million by 2030 that the Government announced to widespread backlash in 2013 is not excessive.

Calling the 10 million population argument “fundamentally economically and socially flawed,” Mr Lam said that he is especially disappointed that the Finance Minister uncritically cited this argument since he is an economist himself and “should know better”.

Reposting a comprehensive rebuttal to the 10 million population argument he previously published in 2018, Mr Lam wrote on Facebook on Friday (29 Mar):

“Disappointed at having to repost this critique of Liu Thai Kers fundamentally economically and socially flawed arguments of why we should plan for a 10 million population in Singapore yet again.“Even more disappointed that Minister Heng, who I have much respect for as an economist and should know better, so uncritically cites this poorly reasoned view based on bad, outdated economic policy that implies a return to excessive immigration that has created so many problems over the last 2 decades including poor productivity, depressed real wage growth and the plight of the working poor, right up to 2010 when it was finally reversed.“Especially since PM Lee made an undertaking in parliament to aim for a long term population “well under 6.9 mln””​

PAP is a very talented party. Their only constraint is the small population of sinkies. If PAP was ruling a country that size of America, America today would be a massive powerhouse that makes the current America look like a 3rd world country.

You may have written this in jest like most of what you write.

There is some truth to it though.

Not many countries in the history of the world have developed within a span of mere 30 years. With no hinterland, no natural resources, tremendous diversity and the looming threat from two much more numerous neighbours nearby. And to top it off, the PAPpies - at least under LKY - never signed a mutual defence treaty with the USA or any other great powers for their security.

It is indeed quite remarkable, despite all the flaws. LKY did gain attention from American media a lot, he created a few controversies and made a few politically incorrect statements. But what mesmerized American or Western academics was how he was able to upend conventional Western theories and turn them on their heads.

What has happened in the last decade or so is another story altogether. A story of constant and repeated failures.

But there is no denying that despite you writing that in jest, there is some truth to it.

Here is the thing.

Tiongs despite all the plaudits from Western mass media, academia, political observers and much self-praise, of course, in the course of 40 years since opening up is still worse off than Malaysia. With tremendous natural resources at their disposal.

With no looming threat from bigger countries nearby or from afar to their very existence. With plenty of land, water, sunlight, agriculture, metal, minerals, oil, gas, uranium, forests, scenery, history and heritage to go with it.

And Sinkieland - in only 30 years- went from a destitute 3rd world dump with rampant disease, corruption, illiteracy and unemployment to one of the cleanest, least corrupt, orderly (not today, but it was so back then), highest IQ, highest TIMSS, highest PISA scoring country.

With no hinterland, no resources, not even adequate water of its own to begin with.

Tiongs have had 40 years and they still can not make it. They think they would need another good 30 years to come close to a respectable standard.

No matter how you see it, there is truth to it that PAP under LKY - with the immense resources of the USA and massive populations - would have been a behemoth unthinkable, not just unseen but unthinkable, in history.
