Car rental scammer caught
POLICE have arrested a 22-year-old man who is believed to be involved in a series of car rental scams.
Acting on information received, officers from Jurong Police Division arrested the suspect at Block 68 Geylang Bahru on Friday at 6am.
A search found car rental agreements, photocopies of the NRICs of his victims, a laptop, duplicate motor-vehicle ignition keys and related documents, which were seized.
Preliminary investigation revealed that in some of the cases, the suspect was believed to have offered to rent cars to his victims but would fail to deliver the cars after payment had been made.
In other cases, the suspect was believed to have entered into agreements with car owner victims to rent out their vehicles. After receiving the vehicles from the victims, he would rent the vehicles to unsuspecting car rental users and pocket the rental fee without giving a portion of the fee to the car owner as agreed or failed to return the car when asked.
The suspect will be charged in court on Saturday for cheating, which carries a maximum punishment of 10 years jail and a fine.
