It's tempting to write off England, but must remember they are the kind of team that can lose to a shit team on a bad day, or can beat any strong team on their good day.

England reminds me of Man City; mostly all star players, but can't gel seamlessly as a single unit unlike Arsenal: a few stars among many so-so players, but can click perfectly after a couple years of rebuilding and playing together.

I hope England go to knock-offs and draw Germany, Holland, Spain or Argentina: then get trashed 5-0 and go home humiliated.

England used to have star players at their peak several years ago. but now ? Rooney is not a top top player. Gerrard is no longer the world class dynamic influence in central midfield. Gerrard is basically Beckham now. Gerrard and Lampard long past their best already. Jack Wilshere is overhyped ? rest of the team is distinctly average + the loser mentality of Roy Hodgson which will not get England far in the tournament. but England is still a difficult team to beat. think England could get draws against Uruguay and Italy. the English traditionally gets past the group stage. no worries about it...

Sorry, I can't name a single English 'star player'. Rooney is the only real star but he's past his prime. Ditto for Lampard and Gerrard, who are more workhorses than 'star players' to begin with.

think Rooney falls into the tier just below world class. Gerrard is a star player. the famous football figures all rated Gerrard as a top top player except for SAF.

In my opinion, Rooney is at best in the top 20 in the world. He is not even top 10. Same for Gerrard.
Offhand I could easily name 10 players who are better than Rooney (in no particular order):

Ronaldo, Messi, Bale, Neymar, Falcao, Iniesta, Aguero, Suarez, Ribery, Cavani.....................

I was comparing the England squad to Man City squad as in they cannot gel properly, not really inferring England players are really 'star' quality. (They do have big egos though)

Anyway it's not as if Italy is that good. Pirlo is old man, Ballotelli is good but you don't know whether he will get red card that kind. Italy always find it hard to score goals nowadays.

I hope someday they organize a EPL dream team vs a La Liga dream team. Imagine: Aguero, Suarez, Rooney, Ramsey, Yaya... vs Ronaldo, Messi, Bale, Neymar...

I've always wanted to see Ronaldo and Messi play together see what it's like.

Only those with colonial hangover and always overdosed on BPL tv will think those familiar english faces are 'world class'.
