Thanks for bringing this up Ash007,i happen to watch this hokkien idol while i was in genting last week it was indeed very exciting to watch, the hokkien dialect in spore is indeed quite worrying because the future generation dont even know how to speak simple hokkien nowadays.

the majority of the newer generations cant speak hokkien except for some simple basic conversation words...or "broken" hokkien....most of sg hokkien are a mixture of teochew + hokkien...

most sporns sing dialects songs are just memorizing the words rather reading than

豬哥會社 one of the best hokkien-speaking taiwanese program with real usage of hokkien....strong usage of chinese idioms and vocab...very big diff in a sg person speaking hokkien vs a taiwanese

Indeed, I'm in China now and was surprised to watch it on the TV here. Even the sole Singaporean singer admitted he has problem with the hokkien accent. The Indonesian singers could even sing better then him. What a shame very malu.

What I don't understand is why the MIW still insist on a full Mandarin policy. There are literally 100s of channels in china, most are Mandarin based but occasionally you have dialects channel like the guangzhou and fujian channel. Even in the Hokkien idol its Mandarin based but the songs are not. Can't they allow something like this?

the very obvious answer is politics...its easy to brain wash and control one's mind using just 1 language rather than having many...

It was shown on malaysia astro live, even the indonesian lady can sing hokkien very well, when i was in xiamen the tv station has got so many channel in different dialect to choose from, you actually wont get bore because their tv channel are quite entertaining.

The MIWs seem to have an irrational hatred for anything that is non English or Mandarin. Look at the quality of the local chinese drama. Its not perfect Mandarin nor the slang that is used in it. I would say Singapore has a failure in policy regarding language. How many speak English campaign have we gone through? How many speak Mandarin campaign as well. It is very easy to identify a Singaporean overseas simply by its accent. I was fortunate enough to be in Australia and met many wonderful PRCs that have migrated here. I've adjusted my accent in time to learn and speak Mandarin properly. I've also met and learned from Malaysian the Hokkien language as well. Still slips up from time to time but could pronounced it better then most Singaporean of my generation. It is indeed sad that we have lost our heritage.

It is not that no one could understand a Singaporean speaking singlish or mandarin. I think it is more the slang that is attached to it. I still can't get rid of it and occasion could be identified by people that are familiar or have stayed in the region before. I always cringed when I hear a fellow Singaporean on the streets in Sydney.

Not sure if MOE still has the same policy or not, but it used to be they hire "ang moh" from Ireland, England, Australia over here in the hopes that they could help "improve" the local English standards. MOE used "incentives" like free lodging, renumeration etc to attract these people. Most of these returned home after their contracts ends. Most are disappointed by the "promises" of sub-par accommodation.

PAP grand social scheme produce half fuck in everything.
But I hope it will be better, betterer and betterest as we progress further into the new century.

We can always speak mandarin but don't kill the dialects. This is just one screwed up policy of the MIW though they will never admit to that. We all know, that is good enough. MIW not that brilliant. They are ordinary chaps with high pay, that is all.

MIW encourages speak mandarin less dialect. But when it comes to GE, their Hougang MP spoke in Teochew. I suppose anything and everything goes, just to win votes. Some other MIW will use Hokkien just to blend in and entice the crowd. Again, for political gains, no problem contradicting themselves.

I agree wholeheartedly because dialects are always integral components in the cultural heritage. The screwed-up technocrats don't have the balls to admit to any wrongdoing. They have committed a very grave error by "killing" dialects and keeping it out of the mainstream. Promote use of Mandarin by all means but one shoudn't use a sledgehammer or bulldozer. The $110.00 TV license is only for producing propaganda! Your enjoyment of dialect-rich programmes comes at a high price which not everyone can afford!

wah serious?

There are so many chinese dialects out there. For this ang moh to select this particular dialect. Well, okay.

China is more diverse then most people would think. To call them dialects is an inaccurate description of the difference in culture between the different regions of china. Even villages has its own languages. I asked my wife the same question, why just minnan, hokkien, has a song competition, why not mindong, minxi or minbei songs. She said, minnan's song do appeal to the hearts more and are well known for their love, sorrowful tones in the accents. I asked what about the other languages, and she mentioned mindongs are more well known in chinese opera. I've listened to the competition, and thought about the dialects I know. Minnan does sounds better when sung as love songs.
