200 arrested in anti-loansharking blitz

SINGAPORE: Police arrested a total of 200 suspects aged between 19 and 74 in a four-day island-wide anti-loansharking operation which started on Monday.
During the 69-hour operation, officers from the Criminal Investigation Department and the six land divisions conducted simultaneous raids at multiple locations in Singapore, resulting in the arrests of 140 men and 60 women.
Eleven suspects are believed to be involved in loansharking activities as harassers or runners who facilitated loansharks in their businesses by collecting ATM cards and carrying out ATM transfers.
Nineteen suspects are believed to have provided false contact information when obtaining loans from loansharks, resulting in innocent victims being harassed.
The remaining suspects are believed to have opened bank accounts and handed their ATM cards and Personal Identification Numbers to loansharks to facilitate their unlicensed moneylending businesses. - CNA/jc
