SINGAPORE – A 70-year-old man who drove away to avoid his nagging wife as she banged on his car door caused her to fall backwards and hit her head.
The injuries to his wife’s head left her bed-bound and unable to comprehend any commands. The 61-year-old woman also needed to use a nasogastric tube for the long term for milk feeds.
Alias Haji Abbas (a.k.a. @syed putra in Sammyboyboy forum) was sentenced to two weeks’ jail on Sept 11 after pleading guilty to causing grievous hurt to his wife by performing a rash act that endangered her life.
On April 12, 2024, at around 8pm, Alias was frustrated by his wife’s continual nagging at home and decided to take a drive to cool down.
He drove from their home in Woodlands to Sembawang Park, parked near the beach and tried to sleep in the car.
At around 2am, Alias woke up as his phone kept ringing, and decided to return home.
As he was neared home, he saw his wife waiting at the entrance of the open-air carpark. Worried that she would create a scene, he ignored her and drove to another entrance to the carpark. He saw his wife walking quickly towards him, and he ignored her again, driving away to find a parking spot.
At around 3.50am, he found a free spot, but as he reversed into it, his wife walked towards him and tried to open the driver’s door.
When she realised the doors were locked, she banged on the car window instead. Alias ignored her and continued reversing the car.
But as his wife continued to hit the car window, Alias drove out of the spot and turned left.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Nicole Teo said Alias knew that his wife was close by but did not check that she was a safe distance away before moving out of the spot.
As a result, the right side of the car hit her, and she fell to the ground. Alias then left the carpark and drove off.
Several bystanders heard the commotion and helped the woman, who was taken to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital. She suffered bleeding in the brain and a skull fracture and underwent emergency surgery.
During her hospitalisation, the victim did not make any neurological improvements, said the DPP, who sought three to four weeks’ jail for Alias.
In mitigation, defence lawyer Mohamed Baiross said Alias is a first-time offender who is working as a welder and contributing to his wife’s medical expenses.
“What happened was purely an accident. The current state of my client’s wife greatly affects him. They’ve been happily married for 40 years,” said the lawyer.
Urging the court to impose a jail term of one week, he added: “Prison will have a harsh effect on him, given that he’s of an advanced age. He also has the full support of his family and his wife’s family.”
For causing grievous hurt by a rash act that endangers life, an offender can be jailed for up to four years, fined up to $10,000, or both.
