the root cause of the Chinese revolution was the Russo-Japanese rivalry where Japanese government and societies would support and instigate the Chinese revolutionaries to overthrow the Manchus and resist the Russians, Japan objective was to get rid of Russian influence in Manchuria.

Foreign powers had controlled the destiny of China in the first half of the 20th century. from Xinhai revolution which was funded partially by Japanese money to the Russian backed Chinese Communists taking over in 1949. China was a big battleground used by foreign powers ( Japan vs Russia / Russia vs US ) to fight their wars which led to millions of Chinese killing each other on the battlefield. 1911 was the start of the Chinese tragedy.

The beginning of the Chinese tragedy was after Ming Emperor Yongle, the decommissioning of the navy, the dismantling of the shipbuilding industry and the closed door policy in the times of surge of technological developments leading to to steel can float, and eventually steel can fly.

It's cos the early 20th century that some ppl still think china is some 3rd world cess pool i wonder when will the -ve stereotypes actually be finally vanquished.

I have never really liked this portion of chinese history but it seems that increasingly many film makers love to focus on this period from movies like fearless or huo yuanjia to the yip man movies to huan fei hong. I guess perhaps the big wigs in the communist party wanted to reinforce the patriotism of the china ppl hence got the Hk directors to make these movies. My guess.

The wu xia or ancient chinese aspect while not so recent has also been kind of overdone too. With that movie by tony leung and of course the famous crouching tiger. Perhaps a film maker could focus something on the middle ages of china somewhere during the ming dynasty and get some historical figure like zheng he and his voyages around the world. Something different for a change.
