150 needy families in Jalan Kayu receive groceries, food items and cash vouchers

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong distributed groceries, food items and cash vouchers to some 150 needy families in Jalan Kayu on Saturday.

They were beneficiaries of the estate's 'Care and Share' programme, launched last year by MP Intan Azura Mokhtar. The scheme aims to facilitate "neighbour to neighbour" help, as groceries and food items were donated by other Jalan Kayu residents.

In addition, the Management Development Institute of Singapore (MDIS) donated $30,000 to the effort.

PM Lee mingled with 1,500 residents at the carnival before watching a dancesport competition. Some 70 couples competed in the Latin and Standard Ballroom categories in the first-ever such event in Jalan Kayu.

Honestly, I am not a fan of welfare state too. I agree with Sam that those who can work should work and not depend on welfare.

However, indeed there are some Singaporeans who really really need help. Yes they are a "liability" to the nation if we look at the hard numbers. But they really need help from the society. I met a number and I really feel sorry. I try to help, but my financial strength is just so limited.

Anyway, it is the Government job to find differentiate those who really need help and those who are "freeloaders". That is a tough job, but they are paid to do this...

I have no problems with assistance being given to those who really are destitute and starving. However, the number of individuals who fall into this category in Singapore is miniscule.

Of the 150 freeloading families that attended in order to receive handouts, I doubt that even 5% actually need help.

You're absolutely right and therein lies the problem. If FREE stuff is being given away and you need to put in no effort whatsoever, why turn down the offer.

However, behind the short term gain lies a long downward spiral towards a cycle of dependency on handouts.

Has anyone asked who is paying for the old farts "helpers", medical bills, wheel chair, limousine services, bodyguards,..... I heard he even gets to travels overseas for the better medical care.

Even poor countries invest in their poor. Many probably spend more on the poor & old than Spore because they recognise that it is part of the function of the gov't to do so.
In the west instituitions are created to do this job while in Spore the task is given to the PAP because they want to appear "charitable". One can even call it vote buying.

Only in Singapore, people work so hard providing for the government to use our money for high stakes gambling. In other countries its the government who used ht people's money to provide for the needy in society in other words government working for the people.
