kanena, this fucker is supposed to be so super duper, that he obtained a 12 year NS deferment to do all his studies, plus was set up with a lab to continue his studies and research under the guise of discharging his NS duties. Professor Patrick Tan who joined the Genome Institute of Singapore (GIS) in 2004 and has been working on cancer genomics/epigenomics and infectious diseases, will assume the appointment of Deputy Executive Director (DED) Biomedical Research Centre with effect from today (1 May).

His pioneering work on Asian cancer genomics was recognised with the award of the President’s Science Award to his team in September 2015. He received the prestigious award from his father, President Tony Tan.

Professor Tan came under intense public scrutiny during the 2011 Presidential Election period where several netizens pointed out that he was granted 12 years disruption from National Service to complete his further education. Professor Tan’s father became the Defence Minister of Singapore in Aug 1995 and served in the Ministry till Aug 2003.

In 2011, Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen had to clarify that he was granted deferment from the years 1988 to 2000 as it was in-line with the prevailing Defence Ministry guidelines at that time.

Professor Tan also posted in Facebook that the allegations about him are false and are intended to hurt his father during the 2011 Presidential Election.

Patrick is a highly-awarded biomedical researcher and will continue to hold a joint appointment with the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School.

Prevailing policy at that time, my arse. It was clear favouritism and special handling. Ask any senior civil servant that was close to this and they will tell you no one has been the same privileges as Tony Tan's son. It too fucking 12 years and he did not have to wear uniform and stayed in normal lab while his NS obligations were counted down. In the mean time some poor NS will die while on training. And the fucking father and mother have the temerity to stay in the Istana after being shamefully exposed.

The guy used GIC Media staff to run his campaign while they were paid by GIC, another abuse of power. Just ask Jennifer Lewis, the head of the Dept in GIC.

He would have been invited to the biggest and bestest top unis in the US to research there with investment firms constantly taking him out to lunch to ask when his breakthrough will happen and how they can IPO his start up genome company. There are people who went to jail or are in jail because Mindef refused to allow them to carry on to do their post grad. The only way the smell will go if an independent inquiry be held and they have to reveal how were given such privileges and were they from the same cohort or similar in order to disguise the special treatment given to the son.
