Knee injury sidelines Di Natale

2 April 2014

436296header.jpg

Udinese have confirmed captain Antonio Di Natale has picked up a right-knee strain, sidelining the veteran indefinitely.

Di Natale, 36, scored in Udinese's 1-0 win at home over cellar-dwellers Catania, and despite lasting the 90 minutes at the Stadio Communale Friuli, club medics later revealed the former Italy international had picked up an injury, with a prognosis yet to be determined.

The injury could put Di Natale's career under threat with the striker having previously claimed the 2013/14 season would be his last.

"The medicals undergone by Udinese captain Antonio Di Natale earlier today have underlined the strain to the medial collateral ligament of the right knee. The extent of the injury will be considered in the next few days," a statement on Udinese's website read.

"In the meantime, the team started training again with an anti-fatigue post-match session for those who played Catania yesterday.

"The rest of the group underwent a regular training session based on exercises of possession and brief friendly matches."

In January, Di Natale said he had decided to 'stop playing football' at the end of the season but two months later he seemed less certain.

"Will I retire in June? We'll see. For now I am useful to Udinese and my goals can still be handy," the veteran forward told Corriere dello Sport.

"I am of a certain age and cannot disguise that, but I have until June to help Udinese stay in Serie A."

Di Natale has been Udinese's leading goalscorer this Serie A campaign with 11, while he has 199 goals in 383 games for the club he joined in 2004.

Luis Muriel (four) is Udinese's next best contributor in the league this season, in an underwhelming season for the club based in Italy's north east.

Udinese sit 14th in the Italian top flight but are well clear of the drop zone - 13 points above 18th-placed Livorno with just seven league fixtures to negotiate.

Tevez wants to join us - Boca president

2 April 2014

436506header.jpg

Boca Juniors president Daniel Angelici claims that Carlos Tevez has promised to return to the club when his contract with Juventus expires.

The Argentina striker has been a revelation since joining the Turin giants from Manchester City last June and is currently the leading scorer in Serie A with 18 goals in his debut campaign in Italy.

Tevez signed a three-year deal with the Serie A champions but, according to Angelici, has set his sights on ending his playing days at the club where his professional career began.

"We always cross paths, Tevez calls me often and we talk," he told Fox Sports Radio Del Plata.

"He wants to end his career at Boca. I am convinced he will join Boca when his contract ends, he will end his career at Boca.

"He gave me his word he will return, but he won't be our next signing as he is still under contract with Juventus."

Tevez, 30, made his debut for Boca when he was aged just 16 and has gone on to enjoy an illustrious career.

Berlusconi would welcome Maldini help

2 April 2014

436531header.jpg

Milan director Barbara Berlusconi says she would welcome the help of Paolo Maldini following his comments about the club's current plight.

The legendary defender, who spent 24 seasons at San Siro as a player, expressed his fear that Milan were being "destroyed" last month, with Milan languishing in mid-table in Serie A.

However, Berlusconi has now opened the door to Maldini, insisting there would be no friction should he wish to make a return and have some input in turning the club's fortunes around.

"Paolo Maldini is a symbol for Milan," she is quoted as saying by Football Italia at a press conference to announce the club's new headquarters - 'Casa Milan'. "All fans are loyal. There is no problem and no friction with him.

"He is always available for the club’s initiatives, as he shows by his continuing participation in the Milan Glorie initiative and his solidarity with the club in general.

"I have had the chance to speak to him about the current situation at the club. If he wants to contribute in some way, we would like him to.

"As with every Milan fan, he wants to see the club at the top."

Gomez expects to be in ´ideal shape´ at Brazil 2014

3 April 2014

436791header.jpg

Fiorentina and Germany striker Mario Gomez believes he will be back in 'ideal shape' before the FIFA World Cup.

The luckless 28-year-old suffered another knee injury in March, a blow less severe than the one that saw him sidelined for five months with serious ligament damage in his right knee.

Gomez is out with a slight tear to the ligaments in his left knee, but appears likely to be fit to represent Germany at Brazil 2014.

The former Bayern Munich striker said he should be back close to full fitness for the start of the World Cup on June 12.

"I think that I can get back in ideal shape before June or July," Gomez told Sky Sport in Germany.

"There is still a long time to go."

Germany coach Joachim Low will be keen to have Gomez in his squad for the tournament, where his side face Portugal, Ghana and the United States in Group G.

Serie A Preview: Fiorentina, Inter eager to firm up continental hopes

3 April 2014

436899header.jpg

After stuttering recently, Fiorentina and Inter can get back on track this weekend as they seek to secure UEFA Europa League qualification.

The sides sitting fourth and fifth respectively in Serie A have each suffered dips in form of late.

Fiorentina have won just two of their last eight league matches, while Inter are winless in three and boast only two victories in seven.

However, after sixth-placed Parma suffered a 4-2 defeat at Roma on Wednesday, both Fiorentina and Inter will be eager to cement their top-five slots.

Inter welcome struggling Bologna to San Siro on Saturday and Vincenzo Montella's men host an Udinese side that appear all but safe from relegation the following day.

Fiorentina were beaten by Milan in their last home game and then drew 0-0 with Sampdoria last time out.

Inter have arguably displayed even more frustrating form, however, losing to in-form Atalanta before dropping further points in draws with Udinese and Livorno.

Their failure to claim victory at the Stadio Armando Picchi came about after a lapse in concentration from Fredy Guarin, who played a catastrophic backpass that enabled Innocent Emeghara to pull Livorno level at 2-2 five minutes from time.

Despite seeing his side give up a two-goal lead, Inter coach Walter Mazzarri did his best to remain positive.

"Those of you who saw the match realise it's one of those years, it needs to be looked at in a certain way," he said.

"Let's try to take the good points out of it, the character we showed until - perhaps unconsciously - the lads thought the game was over."

Parma face another tricky test on Sunday against Napoli, with Atalanta and Lazio - in seventh and eighth - also holding out hope of earning Europa League football.

There is unlikely to be drama in the battle for UEFA Champions League places.

Despite suffering a rare defeat against Napoli last time out, champions Juventus boast an 11-point advantage at the summit and both Roma and Napoli are some way clear of Fiorentina.

In what could be a defining week at the bottom, Livorno and Sassuolo have tough away games at Juve and Atalanta.

Chievo, two points above the drop zone in 16th, host Verona and rock-bottom Catania welcome Torino to the Stadio Angelo Massimino.

Cagliari look all but safe from the drop ahead of their clash with Roma while Clarence Seedorf's Milan will hope to build on their recent upturn in form when they take on Genoa.

Lazio face Sampdoria in the other fixture this weekend.

Serie A Preview: Inter v Bologna

3 April 2014

436900header.jpg

Bologna will take a step towards ensuring Serie A survival if they are able to compound Inter's recent frustrations at San Siro on Saturday.

Walter Mazzarri's men have seen their hopes of UEFA Europa League football dented in recent weeks after dropping points against Atalanta, Udinese and Livorno.

They have still held on to Serie A's final European qualifying place, but will be aware of the need to stop throwing away points cheaply.

Inter's last slip-up came at struggling Livorno on Monday, after they had looked to be cruising to victory courtesy of two first-half goals.

Paulinho pulled one back before Fredy Guarin's misplaced backpass allowed Innocent Emeghara to salvage a point and add to Inter's frustrations.

While Mazzarri refused to single out the Colombian for criticism, he expressed his anger at Inter's trend of giving up winning positions.

"Guarin just needs to play like he knows how, mistakes like the one (at Livorno) can happen," he said.

"You might say it's an off-day, but it's a host of off-days that have seen us throw away important points. We need to progress to assess things well come the end of the season."

Inter will be desperate to end their mini-slump and secure a return to European football following a year out due to last season's ninth-place finish.

Qualification for the Europa League would represent an impressive achievement for a side in a transitional phase under Mazzarri, who is coming towards the end of his first season in charge.

Bologna, meanwhile, are simply focused on staying in the top flight, having won just one of their last eight games to slip to within a point of the relegation zone.

Perhaps more worrying is their recent inability to score. Bologna have found the net just twice during their aforementioned poor run, with both of those goals coming from the penalty spot.

They did hold Inter to a 1-1 draw in November, however, and have also taken points off the likes of Napoli, Parma and Lazio so far this term.

Amid reports the club's hierarchy could opt to dismiss coach Davide Ballardini, who only took charge in January, the 50-year-old insists the board have backed him to keep Bologna up.

"Do I feel the club has faith in me? Yes," he told Sky Sport Italia after Saturday's 2-0 defeat to Atalanta, which drew the anger of many supporters at the Stadio Renato Dall'Ara.

Berlusconi family could sell 30 percent stake in AC Milan

MILAN Wed Apr 2, 2014 4:44pm BST

r

(Reuters) - The family of former Italian premier Silvio Berlusconi is considering selling a stake of up to 30 percent in AC Milan, bringing in new investors to help try to restore the club to the top of the European game.

The club's co-chief executive Barbara Berlusconi, a daughter of the media magnate, told a news conference on Wednesday Milan was seeking partners and she would travel to the Middle East and later to the United States as part of the process.

Barbara Berlusconi said the family remained committed to AC Milan, seven times European champions, but new minority investors could help the club to fund the building of its own stadium to boost revenue.

"We are looking at various solutions for the stadium which would allow us to make a leap forward and compete with the strongest clubs in Europe," she said.

Milan currently share the Giuseppe Meazza stadium with local rivals Inter. The stadium, known as the San Siro, is owned by the local authorities and that limits how much both teams can earn from the venue.

AC Milan was ranked 10th in the 2012-13 football Money League compiled by Deloitte, with revenue of 264 million euros ($364 million).

Rivals Juventus, the Italian champions, have prospered on and off the pitch after moving into a new stadium.

Rumours have been circulating for some time that the Berlusconis were seeking to attract new investors to help revive

a team that is struggling in mid-table in Serie A.

FOREIGN INVESTMENT

Italian football has been hit hard by hooliganism and match-fixing scandals and has not seen the kind of heavy foreign investment that clubs in England and France have enjoyed.

However, there are signs that could be changing.

Indonesian business tycoon Erick Thohir and partners bought a majority stake in Inter Milan last November in a deal that reportedly valued the club at about 350 million euros (290 million pounds). Fellow Italian club AS Roma is controlled by an American investment group.

After buying AC Milan, Berlusconi quickly turned them into the top team in Italy and Europe, winning Serie A in 1988 and the European Cup, the forerunner to the Champions League, in the following two seasons.

Milan's success helped Berlusconi build his profile and launch into politics in the 1990s with a party with the football-inspired name "Forza Italia" (Go Italy).

Milan have not won Serie A since 2011 and have seen some of their best players depart in recent seasons, showing how the balance of financial power in European football has swung away from Italy.

Essien sustains thigh injury

3 April 2014

436975header.jpg

Milan midfielder Michael Essien has suffered an injury to his right thigh, the club announced on Thursday.

The Ghana international came on for Sulley Muntari at half-time of Milan's comprehensive 3-0 victory over Chievo on Saturday.

However, Essien - who moved to San Siro from Premier League outfit Chelsea in January - is now unlikely to feature against Genoa on Monday or Catania on April 13, as the Serie A club assess the extent of his injury.

"AC Milan wishes to communicate that Michael Essien has picked up an injury to his right thigh," a statement on the club's official website read.

"The player will undergo further tests in 10 days' time."

Essien has made six appearances in Serie A for Milan, who have endured a tough campaign and sit 11th in the table with seven games remaining.

Galliani: Rami, Taarabt have set fees

4 April 2014

437103header.jpg

Milan chief Adriano Galliani said the Serie A club have already agreed deals to permanently secure Adil Rami and Adel Taarabt.

Centre-back Rami, on loan from Valencia, and midfielder Taarabt, on loan from QPR, have appeared 11 and seven times respectively for the San Siro outfit.

Rami has outscored Taarabt with three goals to the Moroccan's two, however, Galliani was pleased with both of Milan's loan players, and said they had moved to secure their services.

"We will talk about it in May, when the terms of the loans expire," Galliani told Tuttomercatoweb.

"The fees have already been set."

Galliani said Milan's season - which has seen them battle into 11th spot in the league, seven points behind the European spots - was not as bad as the doomsayers were claiming.

Milan were the best-placed Italian side in the UEFA Champions League, reaching the last 16, and have won consecutive league matches for just the third time all season.

"A club must be measured over more than just a month," Galliani said.

"Over the last 15 years Milan always qualified for Europe and 13 times that was the Champions League.

"Even if we won't play next season, we went further in this campaign than the other Italians (in the Champions League).

"The team appears to be growing in physical and technical terms. I see great improvements and I hope they can be translated into results."

Inter are growing, says Mazzarri

The Nerazzurri coach believes his players are starting to adapt to his tactics better and is looking forward to his future at the club

Inter coach Walter Mazzarri has insisted that the Nerazzurri are showing signs of growth this season.

The San Siro club currently sit fifth in Serie A, just two points ahead of Parma in the race for the final Europa League spot.

However, they finished ninth last term and the former Napoli boss believes they have developed as players this term and is looking forward to the future.

"I see signs of growth," said the 52-year-old."Implementation of the tactics and the organisation of the team have improved.

"I will do everything possible and impossible to bring this team as high as possible. Depending on how we finish will be easier to plan for the future.

"Whoever wants to stay in this team will have to ensure a certain level. Everything will be evaluated.

"To maintain high levels takes constant concentration. It is not easy, some players are not ready yet."

Inter will look to keep up their challenge for a European place when they entertain Bologna on Saturday.

Galliani hopeful of Kaka stay

5 April 2014

437343header.jpg

Milan chief executive Adriano Galliani is hopeful of retaining the services of Kaka beyond the 2013-14 Serie A season.

Kaka has been linked with a move away from San Siro after it was revealed there was a clause in the Brazilian's contract allowing him to leave if the club did not qualify for next season's UEFA Champions League.

Milan are in 11th position in Serie A, 22 points adrift of the final Champions League spot.

The 31-year-old, who is out of contract in 2015, has made no secret of his desire to ply his trade in the MLS one day.

But Galliani is determined to see Kaka remain in Italy after he celebrated his 300th appearance for Milan with a brace against Chievo last weekend.

"The hope of the club, and of Ricky too I hope, is that he stays and celebrates his 400th, 500th and who knows how many more appearances," Galliani told Milan Channel.

"He is in the hearts of all Milan fans. He is still a kid, he can still play in so many other matches.

"I am happy to have met him and I hope he is happy to have found Milan. I hope he can stay with us for a long time."

Kaka has been a key performer in a disappointing Milan side following his return from Spanish giants Real Madrid in September.

The Brazil international has scored nine goals in all competitions for Clarence Seedorf's team.

Thohir has confidence in Mazzarri

4 April 2014

437189header.jpg

Inter president Erick Thohir remains confident that coach Walter Mazzarri can mastermind a strong end to the Serie A campaign.

With seven games to go in the season, Inter sit fifth, but a three-game winless run has allowed sixth-placed Parma to close the gap to just two points.

The dip in form has led to reports suggesting that Thohir will remove the 52-year-old from his position, but he insists he has full faith in Mazzarri.

"If I didn't have confidence in him, I would have let him go a couple of months ago," Thohir told Inter's official website.

"The players need to learn from the mistakes they made against Livorno (a 2-2 draw last weekend), we need to get our focus back on the game.

"At the end of the season we will review the players and the coach together to build Inter's future and that means preparing for next season."

Inter host relegation-threatened Bologna on Saturday looking for their eighth home win of the season in Serie A.

5 things to know about the Italian league with Roma's faint title hopes rekindled

MILAN - Roma will be looking to boost its faint title hopes still further when it visits Cagliari on Sunday, after cutting Juventus' advantage almost in half during the past week.

Juventus hosts Livorno, while third-placed Napoli travels to Parma.

There is also the derby match between Hellas Verona and Chievo Verona this weekend.

Here are five things to know about the Italian league this weekend:

___

JUVE IN CRISIS?

Juventus has found itself in a somewhat peculiar position for the illustrious club this week as it recovers from only its second defeat of the season.

Antonio Conte's side lost 2-0 at Napoli to end a run of seven successive victories and spark talk of a club in crisis.

"It surprises me a bit," Juventus midfielder Claudio Marchisio said. "I read an article in which it said Juventus' 'rule' is coming to an end. We've done extraordinary things in these past few years, and we even still keep improving and enjoying greater leads over rivals who have strengthened.

"It's curious to hear talk of Juventus in crisis because the team lost one game by adopting the wrong approach. This side has always grown and will continue to do so.

The defending champion hosts relegation-threatened Livorno looking to extend its record run of home victories, having won all 15 of its league matches at the Juventus Stadium.

___

RESURGENT ROMA

It has been a good week for Roma, which has seen its faltering Serie A title hopes reignited.

Last week it was 14 points behind the two-time defending champion, but the weekend results coupled with winning its game in hand has seen Roma slash the difference to just eight.

Wednesday's 4-2 victory against Parma also ensured it extended its advantage over third-placed Napoli to nine points.

"This is what we wanted," Roma coach Rudi Garcia said. "We were the only ones playing and the outcome was positive. There was nothing to lose, we just needed to earn points. Now we have the second best attack in the league, which means the team is dangerous and playing well.

"We took a step forward, but until we are mathematically certain of our position we have to keep winning, also to hope until the end against Juventus."

Roma visits struggling Cagliari on Sunday, knowing it can provisionally cut the difference to five points, with Juventus playing the following day.

___

MILAN NOT FOR SALE

The Berlusconi family claims it will not give up on AC Milan despite another difficult season.

Milan is undefeated in its past three league matches but still languishes in 11th spot in the table.

"There's been reports about a sale of the club, but it's not true," club Chief Executive Barbara Berlusconi said. "We believe in this team. We want to obtain the best results.

"A partnership would be considered. For the construction of a new stadium for example, a partnership would be of great help. Our next visits to Asia and the USA are with this aim in mind. We've always invested a lot in the club and we'll continue to do so."

Milan visits Genoa on Monday.

___

VERONA RELY ON TONI

Much of Hellas Verona's hopes will rest on star striker Luca Toni as it heads into Saturday's derby match against Chievo Verona.

Toni and the club had been going through a poor period until last weekend's 3-0 win over Genoa which snapped a run of five defeats and six matches in which Verona had failed to score.

The 36-year-old scored twice in that match to take his tally to 15 for the season and is even being talked about as a possible inclusion in Italy's World Cup squad.

"Even I didn't expect such a positive season," Toni said. "But I knew I could still do well. ... The World Cup depends on (Italy coach Cesare) Prandelli and the characteristics he wants from his forwards. I think it is right that those who took the team to the competition will be called up. Form will also be decisive. I would be honoured, but if I am not called up it wouldn't be a drama."

Chievo is only two points above the relegation zone.

___

NAPOLI REWARD

Napoli has not given up on the idea of beating Roma to second place in Serie A and automatic Champions League qualification.

Napoli is brimming with confidence after beating Juventus last weekend but is nine points behind Roma with seven rounds remaining.

"Napoli-Juve is an eternal battle, a special match which goes beyond the Serie A contest," Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis said. "It's a match which is always played with a strong competitive spirit, as it should be.

"I told the team after the game that I would be delighted to give them a reward if they managed to reach second place. With (coach Rafa) Benitez we are already planning the future, I've been president for almost 10 years and I want to reach even higher results with this squad."

Napoli visits Europa League-chasing Parma on Sunday.

Serie A Wrap: Verona´s Toni settles derby, Inter troubles heighten

5 April 2014

437544header.jpg

Veteran Verona striker Luca Toni strengthened his FIFA World Cup claims by scoring the only goal against Chievo in the Derby della Scala.

Toni fired the ball home from close range after 65 minutes, giving Verona victory at Stadio Marc' Antonio Bentegodi, which they share with Chievo.

The goal took the Italian's tally to 16 in Serie A this term - a new record for a Verona player in a single season - and he sits third in the league's scoring charts, two behind Juventus' Carlos Tevez and one shy of Torino forward Ciro Immobile.

Chievo impressed in the first 20 minutes and forced Rafael into a number of saves, but Verona came to life thereafter.

Juan Iturbe, the diminutive 20-year-old Argentinian on loan from Porto and reportedly interesting Liverpool, tormented Chievo with a couple of dazzling dribbles and forced Michael Agazzi into two smart saves. However, it was Toni, 36, who settled the match.

Victory moved Verona to within one point of Parma, who hold the last Europa League qualifying spot, while Chievo remain two points above the relegation zone.

Mauro Icardi also boosted his chance of going to Brazil 2014 with a brace for Inter Milan, but Diego Milito's late penalty miss meant their under-fire coach Walter Mazzarri had to settle for a 2-2 draw at home to Bologna.

Icardi, who is hoping to make Argentina's World Cup squad, twice put the three-time European champions ahead – a predatory early goal preceding a superb curler from the edge of the box – but Michele Pazienza and Panagiotis Kone both pounced on rebounds to score equalisers at San Siro.

Inter had a glorious late chance to win it when Rodrigo Palacio won a penalty, but substitute Milito failed to beat Gianluca Curci, leaving Mazzarri's men without a victory in four outings.

Inter remain fifth, two points behind fourth-placed Fiorentina and only three above Parma, who have a game in hand.

Serie A Wrap: Destro guarantees Roma top-three finish, Napoli slip

6 April 2014

437788header.jpg

Mattia Destro scored his first Serie A hat-trick as Roma won 3-1 at Cagliari, to guarantee a finish in the UEFA Champions League places.

The Italian forward is enjoying a successful season and did his chances of a late run into Italy's FIFA World Cup squad no harm after a performance that puts Rudi Garcia's men within five points of Juventus.

Destro's first came just after half an hour thanks to good work from Gervinho and he struck again 10 minutes after the break to finish off a superb counter-attack.

He sprung the offside trap to complete his hat-trick 17 minutes from time and though Mauricio Pinilla scored late on from the spot, it wasn't enough to deny Roma a first win in Cagliari since October 1995 - excluding a 3-0 win they were awarded last year without playing.

Napoli are now 12 points further back in third after Marco Parolo's eighth of the season condemned them to a 1-0 defeat at Parma.

The result means Juventus can secure a top-two finish, and an automatic Champions league spot, with victory over Livorno on Monday, while Parma are now level on points with Inter who are in the final Europa League place.

Vincenzo Montella's Fiorentina responded after two winless games by beating Udinese 2-1 and strengthening their hold on the UEFA Europa League places.

They went ahead in the 25th minute through Juan Cuadrado's sixth league goal of the season and Gonzalo Rodriguez doubled the advantage from the spot in the second half.

Udinese caused late panic with a Bruno Fernandes strike but Fiorentina held on to move within nine points of third-place Napoli.

Meanwhile, Catania's 2-1 defeat to Torino resulted in Rolando Maran's dismissal as coach.

Gonzalo Bergessio gave the home side the perfect start after two minutes but Alexander Farnerud and Ciro Immobile struck late on to condemn the league's bottom side to a fifth straight defeat and it led to Maran's second sacking of the season by Catania.

Lazio moved to within two points of Inter after defeating Sampdoria 2-0 despite playing more than 30 minutes with 10 men.

Antonio Candreva gave the hosts a lead just before half-time but they were a man down within 12 minutes of the second half after Lucas Biglia was sent off for his second booking.

But it didn't derail Edoardo Reja's side, who clinched their second consecutive win with a Senad Lulic goal.

Lowly Sassuolo sprung a shock by winning 2-0 at Atalanta to end their six-game winning streak.

Nicola Sansone struck in each half to give Sassuolo a real chance of survival, who are now three points from safety.

Mazzarri laments Inter misfortune

5 April 2014

437564header.jpg

Walter Mazzarri says he should have "smashed up" the dressing room after his Inter side were held to a 2-2 draw at home to Bologna.

Michele Pazienza and Panagiotis Kone struck to cancel out Mauro Icardi's two goals on Saturday, before Diego Milito missed a penalty for Inter seven minutes from time.

The result left the hosts in fifth and without a win in four games, and Mazzarri felt that the breaks had gone against them - while lamenting his decision not to fire up his side at the interval.

"It's incredible, we seem to be missing clear chances and even managed to miss the only penalty we've received all season, despite a champion like Milito taking the responsibility," Mazzarri told Sky Sport Italia.

"Maybe we're just so out of practice that we never score them. It was logical that Diego Milito would take the penalty, as he's always taken them and he had fresh legs, unlike Rodrigo Palacio at that stage of the game.

"I wouldn't say we were unlucky, but incidents went against us. Bologna's first goal went through a sea of legs, the second went in because Rolando slipped over.

"At the moment, everything is happening like this. What are the odds of having a penalty after 33 games and not scoring it? It's just one of those periods where we pay the price for every single mistake. We analyse everything and correct errors in training, but we concede these strange goals.

"In Verona (a 2-0 win last month), I shouted at the players at half-time to raise the adrenaline, as every now and then we lose concentration and intensity. We ended up winning.

"I regret telling the players (here) they were in control and to stay calm. I should have smashed up the locker room!

"These players need to be shaken up and have the adrenaline kept to a maximum."

Despite the draw, Inter remain in contention for a UEFA Europa League qualifying spot, but with Parma, Atlanta, Verona and Lazio all within five points, Mazzarri knows his side could still miss out on European football next season.

He added: "As we are Inter and must always try to win, it can happen that we take the lead and then this fear sets in, as these are very young players. They feel the pressure after recent results.

"For those who saw the games all season, they'd think we deserve Europe. For those who saw the last four games they might think we didn't.

"Football is not an exact science, so even a strong side might not qualify for Europe."

Mazzarri will be at Inter next season, says Thohir

Inter president Erick Thohir has insisted that coach Walter Mazzarri will remain in charge next season despite a recent slump in form.

Mazzarri was appointed as Inter coach in May last year after leaving Napoli, but reports have suggested that his position at San Siro is under threat.

Inter are fifth in Serie A but are winless in their last four league games, the latest disappointment coming in a 2-2 home draw with struggling Bologna on Saturday.

Thohir has had to play down reports he is looking to replace Mazzarri with the likes of Frank de Boer thought to be in the Indonesian's sights.

Mazzarri was summoned for a meeting with his owner in the aftermath of Saturday's dismal showing, though Thohir dismissed any notion that the coach's future was up for discussion.

He said: "We don’t have any problems. Our professional relationship will continue next season, but it’s very important that we prepare for it.

"Of course we can recruit more players, but at the same time they’ll be players who share our vision.

"I think that’s important. And you guys already know some of the players we’re talking about (smiling).

"I think a lot of exciting things will happen over the next six games.

"This morning (Sunday) we discussed the preparations for them, and we’ll see the results.

"They’re tough games: Parma, Lazio, Napoli, AC Milan. So there’s a lot of excitement in store."
