SINGAPORE: Secretary-General of the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP), Dr Chee Soon Juan, has described local press reports that he had ousted former leader Chiam See Tong from the party as a "blatant lie".
He said this in an open letter to opposition supporters on the SDP website on March 29 in response to the comments made by Mr Chiam's wife, Lina.
Mrs Chiam's full account of her husband's exit from his former party was published in The Straits Times and Lianhe Zaobao.
Dr Chee said the "outburst" and "host of personal attacks" were untrue.
"It has poisoned the well again," he said.
Dr Chee said he refrained from answering his critics on this matter because he was hoping that the past would remain where it belonged.
He also said he wanted to look ahead and focus on the fight for a democratic Singapore.
Dr Chee said depending on the developments over the next day or so, it may be necessary to set the record straight.
He said that even at this late stage, he is hoping that something can still be done to avert any open clash with Mrs Chiam, and added that "the ball is in her court". - CNA/vm
