SINGAPORE: Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has said Singapore can learn from Japan on how to manage the ageing issue.

Mr Lee said the ageing issue is more advanced in Japan, and they have a lot of experience making arrangements for the old people.

"Physical arrangements, appliances for homes, arrangements for nursing, taking care, keeping in touch with old folks who are living on their own, so that if something happens you can go and give them help. These are areas which we can learn a lot from," said Mr Lee.

However, when it comes to population issues, perhaps Japan can take a leaf from Singapore's experience.

"I think that in terms of population overall, we have been grappling with the issues of immigration, of foreign workers and there are difficult issues there.

Japan has taken the view that that is too difficult and has been very, very tight on immigration, even on foreign workers. But if you are at some point able to consider that as a politically feasible option, then maybe our experience may be interesting for you to look at," said Mr Lee.

These are among the wide ranging issues that Mr Lee spoke of during an interview with Nikkei Inc last Wednesday (May 14).

Other issues that the Prime Minister touched on include ASEAN growth, progress in the Trans-Pacific Partnership talks and Japan's economy.
The interview was done ahead of Mr Lee's working visit to Tokyo from 21-23 May.

He will be attending the International Conference on "The Future of Asia" organised by Nikkei Inc and the Japan Centre for Economic Research.
He will also deliver the keynote address on "Rising Asia - Messages for the Next 20 Years" to mark the 20th anniversary of the Nikkei International Conference.

Japan is only overpopulated in the metropolis area. Its suburbs and rural areas are much less crowded.

If Japan's politicians dared to throw open the floodgates and offered employment passes, PRs and citizenships to every third world Tom, Dick and Harry to artificially boost the population, they would be hounded out of office long ago.

Singapore is a mere 710 sq km, it has no agricultural industry, no need to grapple with natural disasters. There are many more subtle considerations on a macro scale when you're running a real country many times the size of a snot.

Once again, Lee Hsien Loong is talking shit. :oIo:

MADNESS. Follow Japan now and shut the doors.

Japan will never allow any non-Jap to be its citizens, even Koreans born in Jap are not treated as natives. Any Jap PM following LHL's advice on allowing mass immigration of FTsh surely to die. Only in unique SG that mass immigration is allowed and natives are helpless to stop the immigration.

The father and son has been going around asking other countries to follow them on the population issue BUT none has.

Which people will turn on their own and give preference to outsiders?
It is the sense of cultural self identity that makes them one people and a nation-and you see how the jap's behave during wars-many are willing to sacrifice for their nation and that's why it has lasted for centuries.

Wii a country where people only think of money and wealth be sustainable?-in a crisis it will be each for his own and the rich will flee first.
LKY even said if we do badly we may have to ask Malaysia to take us back-what kind of leader talk like that?

Both father and son are not real leaders in the truest sense of the world. Which country leader in this world want foreigners to outnumber its own natives? LKY and LHL must die so that Singapore can be saved.

“Who is this ridiculous man who wastes my time? Running Singapore is like running Marseilles. I am running a whole country!”

- Former French President Francois Mitterand on PAP strongman Lee Kuan Yew who tried to give him a "lecture" on how to govern France during the duo's meeting in the 1990s

Maybe time for pinky to earn his own accolade from Japanese PM

pap experience is text book solution. But very unpopular for citizen, they can do it in singapore and still win elections. Japan on the other hand , gov cannot guarantee victory if they follow singapore experience.

I wonder why LHL thought it was necessary to give this unsolicited advice to Japan.

Not content with having a foreign circus on our shores, wants japan to suffer too.

I do not disagree with our govt learning better methods and philosophies from successful practices. However, what they failed to understand that an adoption of one such idealogy requires a complete and holistic approach to the problem and not a piecemeal bastardisation of the said policy. Singapore has been doing this piecemeal approach for a very long time and we have successfully achieve the status of a bundle of failures. It shows in their total lack of commitment to tackling issues and constantly offering lip service...sigh....

Unlike sinkieland, japan is not obsessed with unsustainable consumption-filled fake growth dependent on an ever-growing population. They are resilient, and prefectly fine with aging population and eventual decrease in population.

LHL, dont teach your grandfather how to fuck!
