From what I have read(not just the state Times but international media as well) , currently Delta is the big one worldwide. Apparently there is another highly infectious and virulent variant from S America as well. But that one does not seem to have spread widely around the world.

It's because of the Delta variant, plain and simple. Mrna vaccine works but was made for Wuhan. Still works for Delta but less effective. Then add on the waning effect after 6 months of being fully vaccinated might even be less. Boosters are the way to go. Look at Israel for guidance...

The govt is now most concerned about the 88K oldie Singgies who are currently unvaccinated for obvious reasons. Imagine just 10% get Delta that would be 8.8K cases and say 50% of those infected become seriously ill(i am being conservative) that would be 4.4k in icu and probably at least 3.4k...
