Yesterday was written by McCartney lah. Generally each of the Beatles sang lead with respect to the song they wrote. Eg. George wrote Here Comes the Sun, and he sang lead. Also even though most Beatles songs seem to list John & Paul as joint composers, it seems like each wrote their own songs but gave the other joint credit. Even Ringo wrote his own song, Octopus's Garden which he sang.

Paul wrote it. The tune came to his head. Original title was Scrambled Eggs. Not kidding.
