When Chinese EV giant BYD broke into the global consciousness, media reports focused on one thing in particular: its backing from Warren Buffett. Berkshire Hathaway invested about $230 million in BYD in 2008, with Buffett’s longtime partner Charlie Munger calling BYD’s founder a “combination of Thomas Edison and Jack Welch.”

BYD Blade battery is a flawed design, damn scary..no wonder..:

Electric car started to smoke in the early morning, civil defense deployed water guns and fire extinguishers to cool it down

Published / July 11, 2025 18:37

A brand new electric car started to smoke in the early morning, so the Civil Defense Force deployed water guns and fire extinguishers to cool it down.

The incident took place at 00:20 am on Friday (July 11) at the BYD brand's agency dealership at Teban Gardens.

It is understood that the smoking vehicle was a brand new BYD Seal series electric car, which was stationary at the time.

In response to queries from Lianhe Zaobao, Vantage Automotive Pte Ltd, the official distributor of BYD Auto in Singapore, said the dealer had been informed of the relevant accident report.

Dealers said all BYD cars in Singapore are equipped with BYD's "blade batteries" (blade-shaped lithium iron phosphate batteries), a battery technology widely regarded as one of the safest electric vehicle battery technologies in the world.

"Safety is always our top priority. Although initial investigations indicate this may be an isolated incident, we are still treating this matter with the utmost seriousness and will publish a full report once the investigation is complete."

In response to queries from Lianhe Zaobao, the Singapore Civil Defence Force said that when the authorities arrived at the scene, they found white smoke coming out from the bottom of an electric vehicle.

Firefighters immediately used water guns and fire extinguishers to cool down the electric vehicle, and directly injected water into the battery compartment for cooling.

After the battery cooled down, the contractor towed the electric car to the repair shop.

No one was injured in the incident and the Civil Defence Force is investigating the cause of the accident.

All these ranjiao lithium batteries are super dangerous not forgetting with poor range and long charging times which is farking cumbersome.

Now we are still in a transition phase, just like what happened to HDD before it eventually transitioned to a stable SSD drive.

Best is to just go for mild-hybrid or full hybrid first and not to touch any EV and just wait it out til Solid State Batteries (SSB) stabilize in technology.

Once SSB stabilized, it will become a real game changer, safer won't catch fire at all as it is non flammable, charge 3x faster with longer range and much lighter than ranjiao lithium-ion batteries.

The first commercial SSB might hit the market as early as 2026 to 2028 and stabilize in tech and costs after that. Just need to be patient as we don't have to wait too long.

Moreover...all these ranjiao EV subsidies are useless when the road tax and insurance is so farking high.

If the Gov is really sincere in EV adoption then must first reduce the road tax and COE to 50% of ICE cars.

BYD is burn you dead!

From what I understand, the car has a cooling system for the batteries (and motor) to prevent over-heating. So, need to add coolant, just like for an ICE car. Also, if a battery is faulty on a tesla, the entire tray or whatever needs to be changed, just like for the BYD.

Why hold back and wait when government gives each EV owner $40k green subsidiary.
