Last month, civil servant G. K. Tan bought a Sony Xperia smartphone from M1, then put it aside.
When she finally turned it on this month, she found the names and contact numbers of over 40 strangers in its phonebook.
Mrs Tan, 52, returned it to the shop but she claimed the staff said it was probably a manufacturer's fault and that she should contact Sony Ericsson directly.
Her lecturer husband, Mr Y.L. Tan, 43, said he called the supposed owner of the phone, whose number was in there. It turned out to be a 14-year-old girl.
