President Tony Tan Keng Yam was installed as the new Chief Scout at St Patrick's School on Saturday morning.

President Tan will be Singapore's seventh Chief Scout. By tradition, the Head of State of Singapore becomes the Chief Scout of the Singapore Scout Association.

Nearly 6,500 scouts were present at the 'Adiji (Welcome) Chief Scout' ceremony, where most were youths aged between nine to 26. Senior scouts were also present, with the oldest scout at age 90.

According to Scout Chief Commissioner Tan Cheng Kiong, President Tan was an active scout back in his student days at St Patrick's School and then the University of Malaya in Singapore.

How come everyone who becomes President suddenly has a history with Scouts? Lord Baden-Powell must be laughing in his grave. I was Patrol Leader of Troop 1501 Arrow. Scouting means defensive lookout, spying and reporting. Since boys couldn't be sent to battlefronts, boys at war could be made useful by being scouts on homefronts. Lord B-P was also a Gen. who started the Boy Scout movement from his war experience in South Africa. It somehow caught on in Britain and the rest of the Commonwealth. I don't think any boy scout nowadays knows what being a scout means and should be trained for. It's just CCA point-scoring, having fun with campings and campfires. I also don't know what the President has to do with Boy Scouts. Shouldn't the President be Chief Commander of Armed Forces?

hi there

1. the whitehaired is a total no significant thing mah!
2. chief scout or what, no impact.
3. must give title here, title there.
4. btw, me same school, tsk tsk tsk!

Pri. sch. = cub scouts and brownies
Sec. sch. = boy scouts and girl guides

What should a scout know how to do?

- He should know how to read a map
- He should know how to read a compass
- He should know how to climb a tree
- He should know how to swim a river
- He should know how to row a boat
- He should know how to knot a rope
- He should know how to wield a dagger
- He should know how to angle fish
- He should know how to pitch a tent
- He should know how to pitch a watchtower
- He should know how to start a fire
- He should know how to stack a campfire
- He should know how to hunt wild game
- He should know how to cook his catch

Those were just some badges to attain first before qualifying for Scout Patrol Leader. Troop Leader was of course the most outstanding among the Patrol Leaders. I don't know how's the Singapore Scout system now. In my days, the days of Sands House as Scout HQ for those who know and remember Sands House, a Troop Leader could lead the whole troop to Pulau Ubin camping for a week, living off well water and soft wild games like fish and beach crabs. My time, the Troop Leader was only Sec. 4 and the Patrol Leaders were only Sec. 3 or 4. We all went out there and came back safely, without any adult teacher-in-charge.

Only saw he once pose in front of media machiam like medic. But I saw another hand pressing the kid's forehead like to prevent him from getting up. First Aider can become Scout Chief? :D

this guy is also the Commander in chief of the armed forces.....holding the rank of Field Marshal

Of course, otherwise how to coup against any PM that he doesn't like. Look at his regalia uniform. The ranks and ribbons are all there, generalissimo in fact.
