[h=2]SDA secretary-general, Desmond Lim, appeals to Opposition parties to stand behind WP[/h]
February 17th, 2012
The Singapore Democratic Alliance’s secretary-general, Desmond Lim, has appealed to fellow representatives of the Opposition not to contest in the likely upcoming Hougang by-election and to “stand the ground alongside the Workers’ Party (WP)” for the greater good of Singapore.
He wrote on his Facebook:
The former National Solidarity Party (NSP) secretary-general, Goh Meng Seng, said, “I hope there won’t be a multi-cornered fight and the other opposition parties won’t come in because this will affect the chances of the opposition holding onto the Hougang SMC seat.”
“I am confident that WP will still win in the by-election but maybe with a lower winning margin than last year’s because no matter what, there will be some middle-ground voters who are affected by this scandal.”
However, current NSP’s secretary-general Hazel Poa said in a statement that it is premature to be discussing whether NSP would participate in a by-election when it has not yet been called. She said that its central executive council has to meet before making a decision.
Former presidential candidate Tan Jee Say also supports a collaborative effort among the Opposition. He said the first priority is to ensure Hougang remains in the hands of the opposition, and for that to happen, the opposition should work together to pick a candidate they can all agree on.
Meanwhile, on the Net front, the netizens are generally supportive of the idea for the other opposition parties to leave WP alone to fight with PAP in Hougang, once the by-election is called:

He wrote on his Facebook:
To all fellow representatives of the Opposition,
This is the time for us to set aside our differences and defend our Hougang SMC, for we must do all we can lest it falls into the same fate as Potong Pasir.
I hereby earnestly appeal to all fellow politicians, to convince their parties, that the only way forward for a strong and unified Opposition come GE 2016 will be: to follow SDP’s lead in making an open declaration not to participate in the forthcoming by-elections; and to stand the ground alongside the Workers’ Party and defend Hougang SMC, for the greater good of Singapore.
I sincerely plead.

Aftermath: SDP did the right thing. Hope other party will do the same.
Gem: SHOWDOWN between PAP and WP in HOUGANG – this is what the ppl expect and this is probably what we would get. Any third party involvement in the by-election would not be viewed upon kindly by the ppl.
gnow: Opposition should be united and let this be a one to one fight between WP and PAP. A clear message must be sent to the PAP that they must put Singaporeans first, not themselves, not the elites, and definitely not the FT.
PingPong: Salute Dr Chee and SDP! The rest of the opposition parties should also not step in and ka-cheow ka-cheow. This is the time for all to unite and challenge the traitor ruling party.
wolf: The rest of the opp parties, plse stay away… we want a real fight between WP & PAP!
Dude: Dear Opposition Parties, Pls leave Hougang Ward to the Worker Party… Don’t come in and take up the votes meant for WP…..
Angry Duck: Singaporean do not like to see 3 corners fights. One to One, PAP vs WP. That is what we like to see in Hougang by election!
Vote For Change: While I am not exactly a CSJ supporter, I salute him for being sensible. I will lose my respect for Tan Jee Say and the other opposition party if they decide to contest in Hougang. I would classify them as mole of PAP if they do so.
