There were rumours for a long time that Toh CC wanted to go into opposition after he was made known in advance to retire by 1988.

In 1987, he met a few from opposition for discussions, who were mainly from SDP and SUF, but after accessing that these chaps were not able to "make it", decided against it. In addition after Lee Kuan Yew learnt about it gave him the post of NUS chancellor and he stayed put.

The few chaps eventually formed the NSP.

Has anyone heard of such rumours?

Dear Perspective,

He did more than that. I believe that he did a " Tan Cheng Bock " before doing a TCB was a fashionable thing. He I believe out of loyalty could not betray the PAP but because of his loyalty to Singapore tried to seed, and help a future opposition. And it is true

I do not comment on rumor....?!

Strange that the WP doesn't comment on rumor but their insect head likes to spread rumor?

TCC was never chancellor of NUS; this is an honorary post which the President of Singapore holds. He was, however, the Vice-Chancellor in the 1970s. I'm not sure whether he was considering going into opposition politics but in the mid 1980s, he definitely wanted to know how young people felt about the government and the extent to which an opposition would emerge.

He met many people under many situations. I can confirm this because I was one of those invited and I accepted. Nothing came out of the meeting and I never met him again.

What I understand is TCC had some different points of view with LKY in the mid 1980s. LKY retired TCC from PAP. TCC talked to TCK but somehow TCC wasn't convinced by or had no confidence in TCK. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, TCC helped CST as behind-the-scene adviser until CSJ couped SDP and he gave up politics for good.

In fact, many good people were against PAP policies. TCC, TCB, Tan Soo Koon and many others. Unfortunately, all these people gone into low profile because LKY has tamed the kangaroo court, bought SPH and kept a gang of chief poodles. AS such, there is very little resources for all these aspiring pioneer to GO AGAINST PAP flawed policies resulted in what Singaporeans faced today - every damned thing screwed up by the LEE family. Did LKY just said about rejecting Singaporeans view on immigrations, see how terrible LKY is and you know why Toh Chin Chye stepped down?.

Yes, vice chancellor, sorry. Thanks for this. Interesting.

I heard the part about TCC and TCK, but what TCC thought of TCK I don't know, but I think it was the group and not TCK alone that he did not go ahead. As for the advisor to Chiam, that is new to me.

Toh Chin CheeBYE was a traitor to the nation. He singlehandedly voted for LKY and was the deciding vote on numerous occasions. The only reason the CHeeBYE started to complain was after he was ousted from parliament and was refused rewards from the bastard party that he started. But it was easy to silence a scum like Toh CheeBYE. Just provide him with free medical care and he would shut his shit up. This is the same man that helped to imprison hundreds of dedicated Singaporeans because they opposed his fascist political views. Toh CheeBYE!!!

TCC was longtime friend of CST. I understand that it was he who tipped off CST to shift target from Cairnhill to contest Howe Yoon Chong (CEO HDB) in Potong Pasir in 1979 BE over HDB and CPF policies but it was a standard PAP scoreline of almost 70%. As HDB and CPF policies got more and more strangulating on the populace, CST persisted in contesting PP in 1980 GE and scored over 40% and finally won in 1984, but against MBT as HYC was already sent to retirement village by then.

CST pursued the issue in Parliament all the way until TCW (MND) committed suicide. Whether it's ironic or intended by the power-that-be, I don't know, but MBT eventually won in Tampines later and proceeded to start another round of HDB uppricing that proved to be even worse. HYC became a very humbled man after that.

Hmm...didn't know there are so much deep history here. So everything written by the Men-in-white is a total rubbish?
It seems like I am younger than many bros here....hahaha. Reading this forum is like reading SINGAPORE TRUE HISTORY.

You can almost say everyone who retired early had held some opposing views from the Old Man. If it was age alone, he would not have stayed until 88 while the others were gone in their 60's.
