In what seems to be the culmination of several months of rising tension in the Singapore People’s Party (SPP), six key members of its central executive committee (CEC) have resigned from the party.

Yahoo! Singapore has learned that its first assistant secretary-general Wilfred Leung, second assistant secretary-general Benjamin Pwee, organising secretary Ting Sze Jiang, Malay/Muslim Affairs head Mohamad Hamim bin Aliyas, his wife, who is also a member of the party CEC, and SME businessmen affairs head David Tan all submitted notice of their resignations from the party to secretary-general Chiam See Tong and chairman Sin Kek Tong in the days leading up to and on Friday evening.

Last week, it emerged that Leung and Pwee had advised the CEC of their intention to decline being re-elected, while Tan was the first to inform the committee of his decision to resign from the party.

Tan told Yahoo! Singapore on Friday, “My reason is my sense of belief that one or two key CEC members are not willing (to accommodate) a complete change over for collective leadership and accountability, and that being the case, my presence in the party will not add credible value.”

He added that the decision to leave the party was a difficult one for both himself and “several like-minded CEC members”, whom he did not identify.

Yahoo! Singapore also understands that several other CEC members, including long-time veterans and loyal supporters of Mr and Mrs Chiam, may be submitting their resignations on Saturday.

Another source said at one point, Mrs Chiam had even threatened to commence legal proceedings against a key CEC member.

The mass exodus comes ahead of the party’s annual congress, scheduled for Sunday afternoon at the SPP headquarters at Siang Kuang Avenue.

Despite repeated attempts, Mrs Chiam could not be reached for comment.

I knew it was a big mistake when they ask her to be an NCMP...

opp has taken 3 step forward in the last GE and 30 steps backward in the past 2 days

this what happen when you give an illiterate ah soh nurse too much power.....look at 慈禧太后

chiam has no legacy left liao except he fell out with 4 proteges..... the only protege still on good terms with him is now on the run .....

I hope not to sound like the "village idiot-insect-hybrid-along-with-the-fat-and-low-intellect" chap and boast, but some of the guys seem to have read my advice/forum to them in this forum. I would rather think it is better to break (and form up) now when the GE is still far away. At least they can start early to prepare their cards and permutations of which-party-which-ward. By the time GE comes, people would have already forgotten this SPP saga.

Not like RP, which broke up so late, earned bad publicity, people had to give up on work they had done to date, and end up both sides lose-lose. The departing chaps kept cards close to their chest, last minute hunting for party, "hang up and sell", and further delaying the work they could have done for those weeks. RP was second to WP, their saga ended up allowing WP to become sole opposition.

This proves that when it comes to running Singapore, the PAP is simply the best. All the other parties are completely lacking in discipline and unity and the morality of many of the key members of the opposition is questionable too.

The PAP may have its faults and its black sheep but these pale in comparison to the mess the opposition is in.

Imagine the harm that would come to Singapore if a freak election result puts these clowns in a position of power. It would be an absolute disaster.

If you want 100 points, you'll have to earn them. Agreeing with me requires no effort. I need to see you actually doing battle with those moronic socialists before I consider increasing your points.

PS: I have zapped you for soliciting for rep points without putting in any effort.

if you are already living hand to mouth , what greater harm can come to you ?

From the brief news, it seems Mr and Mrs Chiam wanted to reform CEC but I believe some key members (old man Sin Kek Tong?) are not willing to take leadership from new blood such as Wilfred, Benjamin and others? Anyway, just guessing, the news look scattered. Will wait and see their upcoming report.

This episode also reflect local SME boss mentality, not willing to accept new ideas and change, always relying on traditional way of running business and bossing around. You will keep hearing SMEs pestering PAP for bringing in more cheap foreigners to flood our land instead of improving on their technology and productivity
.

YOu only see one side of the coin, LKY treated his men like dogs and he carries whip and changi cage is always ready if anyone disobey him, the court and police are behind him, so how not to force people to be cohesive? Chiam do not have such priviledge of country resources to keep his men in order.".

I tink it is not fair to accuse Sin Kek Tong. He had made declaration to step down from CEC back in Oct last year.

<Singapore People’s Party (SPP) chairman Sin Kek Tong revealed he is stepping down and will not be running for the position in the next central executive committee (CEC) election to be held in December.

Sin, who is also the party’s founder, told The Straits Times that his decision was partly due to a recently damaged retina in his right eye. He has had two operations in the past three months, and though his eye is still functional, he needs another two months to fully recover.

The other reason, he said, is to promote party renewal. In 1994, he set up the SPP as part of a breakaway faction of the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP).

“When I set up the party, I had hoped that it could be what the Workers' Party is like now in size and force. But it is still not like that,” he said.

“I've done all I can and I hope the younger members can build up the party and win more constituencies at the next election,” the paper quoted him as saying.>

Dying from starvation?

No wonder that 2 buggers worked for the Japs. So, their bowed bodies were not about being traitors but because it was done out of a good reason. Some people here may not understand. You may want to elabourate why voting for PAP equates to survival of Sinkingland.

SINGAPORE: Six members of the opposition Singapore People's Party have resigned from their party.

They include Wilfred Leung and former civil servant Benjamin Pwee, who were widely expected to succeed the incumbent leader, Mr Chiam See Tong.

The others who resigned are the party's Organising Secretary, Ting Sze Jiang; Head of the Malay/Muslim Affairs Bureau, Mohamad Hamim bin Aliyas; Head of the Women's Wing, Mrs Mohamad Hamim bin Aliyas; and Head of the SME Businessmen Bureau, David Tan.

This comes ahead of the Party Congress to be held on Sunday, where a new Central Executive Committee (CEC) is to be formed.

Speaking to Channel NewsAsia, Mr Pwee said: "For us, Mrs Chiam is a non-constituency MP. So we feel that it is time for SPP to rise up to become a national-level party and address national issues, beyond just a single local constituency alone. So I think there are some differences in terms of approach and emphasis as to what level we (should) play at."

In a media statement, the members cited differences in opinion about party leadership styles and the future direction.

It added that deep and long-term relationships within the key CEC members had also "quickly unravelled and broken down".

But two-thirds of the CEC remain, and the Party Congress to elect a new CEC will proceed as planned.

In a posting on the Facebook page of his wife Lina Chiam, as well as that of the SPP, Mr Chiam said the six members wanted to pursue their own interests.

He said the party respects them on this. He added that there is no change at this moment and that it will be "operations as usual".

Mr Chiam said the party under his leadership will continue to seek new passionate and talented individuals, with the right aptitude and who will pursue the opposition cause cohesively.

SINGAPORE: The opposition Singapore People's Party (SPP) held its Ordinary Party Conference (OPC) on Sunday, and has elected a new Central Executive Committee (CEC).

It comprises of the eight remaining members of the previous CEC, after six members quit on Saturday.

It is understood that if there are any new faces, they will be co-opted into the CEC.

The closed door session began at about 1.15pm at the party's new headquarters at 1 Siang Kuang Avenue. 20 to 30 cadres and supporters also attended the session.

At about 2.20pm, Mrs Lina Chiam stepped out to give a statement to the media.

She said the OPC has proceeded to re-elect the remaining members of the CEC.

The election of the office bearers will take place after the first CEC meeting. The OPC also fully supports the leadership of the CEC.

Mrs Chiam declined to reveal the names and number of members in the committee, adding that this will be revealed later.

It is understood that both Mrs Chiam and Mr Chiam remain in the committee, along with old members like Sin Kek Tong, Jason Leong and Yong Seng Fatt.

The CEC will meet in three weeks to decide on the positions.

The re-election comes just after six members announced their resignations from the party on Saturday. They include Wilfred Leung and former civil servant Benjamin Pwee, both were widely expected to succeed the incumbent, Mr Chiam See Tong.

In a media statement, the members cited differences in opinion about party leadership styles and the future direction.
