Lawyers - The Good, Bad and Ugly Ones

Boss of TAM also boss of Orchard K and old Hollywood at Furama. Indon chap named Ghazali. Chinese though. Son running his biz now. Drank with him previously but didn't feel at ease so left early.

Most Indon Chinese register Indon names. Even Rudy Hartono 梁海量 was regsitered Indon name. One of the rare ones, Liem Swie King 林水镜 insisted on keeping Chinese name. If you know anything about badminton, you'd know what I'm talking about. If not, nevermind too.

Punch Gunalan, Yeo Ah Seng, Tan brothers from M'sia - Aik Mong and Aik Huang?

Can or not? Uncle also bad-and-bedminton player in my younger days.

Hartono sounds Chinese but Ghazali sounds more Malay. During Hartono's time, Ade Chandra and Christian Hadinata were champions in doubles.

There's a difference between Malay or Arabic. Most Malay (Malaysian and Singaporean Malay) names are Arabic, not Malay. Most Indon names are the real Malay names.

You cannot become a lawyer (even US citizens) without a basic degree in whatever discipline. Then can you enter a law school. You'll graduate, if you pass, as a JurisDoctor.

Agreed but not true if you already have a law degree from an established UK university (for e.g. like UCL, LSE, Nottingham, Oxbridge) - apply to a Master's prog. and that technically means you have an American law degree - pass the bar and you can qualify to apply for a license once you get a job as an attorney.

You don't have to do a law degree from scratch (if you already have a law degree) to get a JD. A number of friends went down that route. It then depends on the school you go to and the state you eventually want to qualify to practice in.

Here's a quick example of a very prominent UK barrister - look at the CV - after he finished Bar School he went straight to Harvard for his LLM - http://www.essexcourt.net/members/profile/?b=48

Technically Toby has 2 Masters degrees - one from Oxford and the other from Harvard.

When realised that he was going to jail, he began to start accumulating. It is not the usual financially embarrased case. Joyce was also earning big bucks. His case is similar to the lawyer brother of Ivy Singh as it was the same syndicate. The brother was charged and disbarred. He was finally acquitted after spending more than a million dollars and appeals.
Bro, his car kena towed away. Banks and friends chased him for otanged money.

Agree.

Amarjeet Singh, former JC criminal law court skills are well regarded even though he seldom do these cases.

actually the best criminal lawyers/advocates wld probably be the best civil lawyers/advocates...?...becuz the top legal talent is invariably found under civil legal work becuz generally much more lucrative n the work is naturally more complex in nature...same comparison wld apply in the uk...best advocates now in sin wld probably be chaps like cavinder bull, alvin yeo, andre maniam, harpreet singh, ang cheng hock etc...michael khoo is solid old school type...davinder singh is still v gd but looks like he taking more of back seat at d&n...solid criminal lawyers wld probably be sant singh, wee pan lee, edmond pereira, fernando...abrahim vergis n wendell wong not too bad as well...

Sant is semi retired and comes down from Perth. But he is worth every penny. Very good with the law and is respected by his peers in this regard. One thing you will notice is that Sant charges high because his cases are less likely to go to trial.
Sant very ex to engage. Need to put down 50k deposit first. Would rank Edmund, Peter and Leo slightly behind Sant but way above Subhas. Wendell was DPP and prosecuted Ah Long San's case. Up-and-coming from what I heard.

The late Palakhrishnan not too bad either. Fees were ex too. You will know who the good ones are coz police officers have a phobia facing them in court. There are also many lawyers whom police officers 'enjoy' being cross examined. The ones with little substance. Most fear the late JBJ too. None were fearful of LHD!

This chap's Jaguar car was vandalised by Michael Fay and friends about 20 years ago. The late Pala was lawyer for Fay.

Pala was good as well. Khoo Teck Puat hired him to defend his son in Brunei. Thats tells a lot when the richest man in Singapore hired the best.

I've met a lawyer only once, at a firm called Tan Rajah (or something like that) accompanying my sister for her divorce case. I think he handled the case very well and settled everything smoothly for my sister, well worth the the $2k fee.

Why so blur, you say that its an understatement giving the impression that you know about him. Pala was one of the earlier ones to get SC.
That is an understatement.BTW, why wasn't Pala made an SC ? Because he didn't nominate himself ?

Thanks for the clarification.

The scheme was launched in 1997, but Pala made it only in 2001. He should have been in the 1st batch.

That's cheap. Did your sister has any kid or was awarded any maintenance?
