Shanghai tightens control of microblogs: Report

The move comes amid a surge in social unrest that has been concentrated in the manufacturing heartland of Guangdong. -AFP

SHANGHAI - Shanghai will require microblog users to register under their real names from Monday, state media said, the latest local government in China to implement the rule after a spate of violent protests.

Beijing and the southern province of Guangdong have also ordered users of weibos - microblogs similar to Twitter - to register using their real names, as authorities tighten their grip on the Internet.

The move comes amid a surge in social unrest that has been concentrated in the wealthy manufacturing heartland of Guangdong.

Residents protesting against land seizures and a power plant in the province recently posted photos and reports of their demonstrations on weibos, defying official efforts to block news of the incidents.

With more than half a billion Chinese now online, authorities are concerned about the power of the Internet to influence public opinion in a country that maintains tight controls on its traditional media outlets.

Shanghai said the new rules aim to "foster a healthy Internet culture" and improve management over social networking, the official Xinhua news agency reported late Sunday.

The guidelines will apply to both private and corporate users in Shanghai.

Previously, users have been able to set up weibo accounts under assumed names, making it more difficult for authorities to track them, and allowing them to set up new accounts if existing ones are shut down by censors.

Despite official censorship of the web, ordinary Chinese are increasingly using weibos to vent their anger and frustration over official corruption, scandals and disasters.

A weibo user is believed to have broken the news of a deadly high-speed rail crash in China in July that provoked widespread condemnation of the government - much of it online.

I think it is a wonderful idea. There will be clear accountability and people will behave responsibly. We also will have less people making dishonest comments and spreading falsehood. Society will be better for it as most people will more friendly. Popularity will also rise. I always believed that democracy requires votes to be transparent, published for scrutiny as people are not afraid to speak the truth. The western model of democracy is clearly flawed. Let Singapore be a model.

China people are not stupid. They know how to bypass the censorship and restrictions imposed on the Internet.

Many PRC folks are pissed off at the Chinese Communist Party government.

Those who like this idea pse post your NRIC here at once, front & back of NRIC ASAP! Come on!:D

SBF is a truly a progressive, transparent, credible and authentic forum, as real identity is already practised here.

Perspective is known to all. So is Ramseth, Lockeliberal, Cleareyes and Leetahbar. JiXiaoLan is practically exposed, Chia Ti Lik and Goh Meng Seng use their real names, OverTheCounter everyone by know has figured out who he is, and even Clinton666 has had his picture posted for all to gawk at. Oh what the hell, even TracyTan is known.

Let us all put our names, NRIC, address, and credit card numbers on our ballot slips, on our forum nicks, even our underwear. Then truly we will be global citizens!

Must include pastimes and hobbies especially for people who wanted to overthrow the regime or Islamic Fundamentalism.

Sorry Bro, I have to stop you at the underwear. That's personal. Some of us in times of austerity tend to share with the other half. I know it is not a pretty picture but what to do.

On a lighter note, I remember when we got into the web for the first time and it was the days of the Bulletin Board and the allegation of being keyboard warriors, armchair critics etc hiding behind a cloak of anonymity was a common accusation when an argument could not be countered, or the guy had no clue how to handle it despite the sheer fragility of the argument. For some reason it never dawned on them if any argument is sound, its correlation to it author's identity is practically useless.

15 years later and things have not changed. "Under the cloak of anonymity" seems to be the war cry of the slow and the really slow.

Note the PM and his allegations about falsehoods on the web.

there's no such thingie as anonymity in sg. pseudo anonymity perhaps, but no total anonymity. to some other forummers, you may remain anonymous, but not the authorities. for example, local starbucks and the airport provide "free" public internet access to visitors, including foreigners. but think twice. to get access, a "tourist" must register with the ida via a local isp using passport number, local valid address with a valid postal code, and mobile number. otherwise, registration will be denied. once accepted, a text message will be sent to your mobile giving you the password. at the airport, a visitor needs to show passport to receive user id and password. the "free" service is good for 4 hours. with tethering, your neighbor will get into trouble if you tether on hisher device to post malicious slander and libel about your drinking buddy. :p

Its good idea to know the limitations but more importantly the type of information to be released where it is released from. Even more important is the building track record of the nick. The ability to differentiate between state secret and non state secret is paramount. Foo Mee Har's conduct is not state secret. Shanmugam shenanigans in the vicinity of Hong Lim Green is also neither state secret. The decision of Cabinet once communicated outside the Office is no longer state secret unless it has been classified even if it leaves authorised channels. Most Singaporeans however has been erroneously being led to believe that anything adverse to the Govt is State Secret. Then we have an imbecile running for Parliament who thought that until Foo Mee Har acknowledges it or when it is published in the Straits Times, it therefore has to be false.

If their partners weigh past 70kg, you still want?

Frankly by now, having through it all, beauties, slims and lights, I'd still want her if she shows me that she truly loves me. I'll love her back equally or more. Beauty isn't everything and it couldn't last till death doth us part, only true love can.

Goodest luck to you bro.
