UITP has chosen Singapore to anchor its training, research and knowledge activities for the Asia Pacific region because Singapore has demonstrated excellent public transport development with continued innovation, and of LTA Academy's role in capacity building, research and knowledge development synergising with UITP's activities in the region.

Mr Chew Hock Yong, LTA's Chief Executive said, "LTA is honoured to partner UITP in setting up the Centre for Transport Excellence and co-hosting the SITC. Through collaborating with renowned organisations such as UITP, we can acquire cutting edge knowledge, which helps to meet our vision to deliver a land transport system that meets the diverse needs of an inclusive society and one that provides for a liveable and vibrant global city."

There is no doubt that Transport Minister Liu is a Singapore product. He is totally insensitive and impervious to the scorn which the population is already pouring on the authorities and SMRT on the handling of the chaos that is happening. We need look no further than Sunday morning when even with planning, the 'free' buses for commuters was still badly managed. And the accolade in the agreement - truly, the mother of all ironies!

Singapore to house regional transport hub - The Straits Times

Singapore will be home to a centre that will provide support to land transport administrators in the region.

The facility, called Centre for Transport Excellence for the Asia-Pacific Region, will be set up by the middle of next year.

A memorandum of understanding was signed by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and the International Association of Public Transport (UITP) on Tuesday.

The centre aims to be a one-stop hub where transport knowledge and research will be shared via conferences, training programmes and study visits.

With growing populations, cities will have to find new ways to meet the travel needs of their residents to enhance mobility and livability.

Based at the LTA Academy in Hampshire Road, near Little India, the centre will focus on issues of public transport and sustainable mobility.

A joint news release on Tuesday stated that UITP chose Singapore to base its research and activities because the country had demonstrated excellent public transport development and continued innovation.

UITP is an international network of players in the public transport industry, including authorities and operators as well as policymakers and scientific institutes.

It has 3,400 members from 92 countries.

One initiative by the centre will be to organise the first Singapore International Transport Congress in October 2013.

The biennial event will gather international speakers to share insights on urban transport issues and solutions.

Participants will include policymakers and industry players.

At the signing on Tuesday, UITP's secretary-general Hans Rat said: 'Ever-evolving societies, changing commuters' behaviour and escalating expectations make managing transportation in a city a work in progress.'

LTA's chief executive Chew Hock Yong said the collaboration would help Singapore acquire new knowledge to build a people-centred land transport system that would meet diverse needs and provide for a livable environment.

When I read words like .....transport excellence .....because the country had demonstrated excellent public transport development and continued innovation......

I don't know whether to laugh or cry.
But now I know how to excel in the public service sector in Singapore - to be unbelievably thick-skinned ! The words Pai-seh must not exist in your dictionary !

Given the fiasco in our SMRT, the timing of this report in Straits Times is simply uncanny.

Our keynote speaker today is the honorable Ms Saw Phiak Yu. The topic of the day will be :

"How to destroy a Mass Rapid Transit System in less than 5 years".

The address starts at 6.00 pm.

Those taking the MRT to the venue are advised to factor in 9 hours of traveling time to allow for possible delays.
