SINGAPORE: Over the last five years, about 8,800 males who had become permanent residents under the sponsorship of their parents were enlisted for and served National Service (NS).

About 6,100 of them have taken up citizenship.

Defence Minister Dr Ng Eng Hen gave the figures in a written reply to a parliamentary question from Nee Soon GRC MP, Dr Lim Wee Kiak.

In that same period, about 4,200 males who had become permanent residents under the sponsorship of their parents renounced their PR status prior to serving National Service.

Dr Ng said the failure of these permanent residents to serve NS will be taken into account when they subsequently apply to study or work in Singapore.

These PRs were warned about the consequences of their action at the point of renunciation.

Eh, are there any consequences

If that is the case than how many foreigners were made to pay the price for decision not to serve:confused:

Hi,

I understand that PR children are given subsidies etc during their time as PR in Singapore. Since they did not fulfill their NS obligations and left the country, (I have an ex colleague who did that) it means the country lose money. How is PAP going to deal with this? Or let such scammers go free?

I recommend that from now on, all male PR children have to pay a bond like what Singaporean males pay if they defer their NS for overseas education. If they do not served, the money is forfeited to the state for welfare policies for Singaporeans. Also such scammers will be barred from Singapore for life or face criminal charges and be treated the same way as Male Singaporeans who did not serve NS and did not return to Singapore.

No, there will not be any consequences. Even if there are, it's just a few thousand dollar or few hundred dollar fine.

Simi consequences:confused: Just come back as FTs and help create jobs for sgps lor. FTs are badly needed here:)

Says so much about these PR loyalty, when it comes to the crunch, 47.7% of these males decided to run road. :o

How on earth did you get a figure of 47.7%??

What was the objective of the question by the MP:confused:

PRs come and go, the numbers are revolving given each band of period. "Renounced PR at what age prior to serving NS" Precisely just before age of eligibility or way before, or after:confused:

Can give band of 20,15, 10 and 5 years or not?

What is NS? 2yrs + reservists or just the 2yrs:confused:

How many PR renounced during reservists?

So many questions arises from the vague question and answer given:rolleyes:

And what is the conclusion and implication:confused: Maybe I speak for myself, imo, am surpised if any can be decifered and drawn:confused:

No offense, but frankly I am surprise that you can draw a conclusion. But then again, maybe I am stupid:o

Apologies.. haven't got my cup of coffee. :D

Should be 32.3%. (4200 / 13000 )

Funny. Why does Singapore regard PRs as almost citizens? Is it because we give them terms almost the same as citizens e.g. this subsidy, that subsidy?

Still getting millions in salary of course not big deal la. Wait till you outsource garment to FT then it becomes a big deal
