Daily average ridership on the Circle Line has shot up by more than 60 per cent to about 300,000, one month after the final two stages of the orbital MRT line opened.
Prior to the Oct 8 opening, the line saw daily ridership of 180,000.
The surge was more than double what train operator SMRT was expecting.
[h=5]Background story[/h]Problems along East West line
COMMUTERS on SMRT's East West line continue to experience hiccups despite a new platform having opened at Jurong East interchange in May to relieve a service bottleneck there.
Stockbroker Cole Cheong, 40, who has been taking the line for 20 years, said things have actually worsened: 'The trains are very crowded, and people get into quarrels frequently because of that. There are service disruptions at least once a week. Just 10 years ago, things were smoother, we had a lot more private space on the trains.'
SMRT chief executive Saw Phaik Hwa said the system is 'still reliable compared with other systems', and 'I don't see anything significant' in the number of disruptions and delays. She attributed them to higher service frequency, new trains which 'need to break in', and more rainy days. Another factor is the erection of platform screen doors at surface stations, which need to synchronise with train doors.

Its chief executive Saw Phaik Hwa said ridership may reach 400,000 by the end of the year - much faster than the six-to-nine months envisaged by the Government.

The "poor planning" is just a simple reflection of incompetent management who had no idea about the market size, market growth, impact of government policies on the travelling public. Notice there is now ZERO touting about how many persons per sq metre of train space nowadays? Incompetent Red Head Saw used that data to make her infamous statement about whether people chose to board the train or not. Someone should invite her to try boarding the train at some stations soon.

Her focus from Day One had been on generating revenue from the retail space. Not unlike the ministers' approach on generating GDP, as the bonus figure depended on $$$$ - and the the customer can go FCUK spiders for all she cares.

I will show you a spectacular Human Congestion @ Road Crossing which is very UNSAFE. Video uploading now. ;)

This shows the problem is not only a lack of capacity planning but also a lack of planniing of how people traverse and commute between destinations.

I suppose when they selected the location of these interchanges ( including Jurong East ), did they say "hey, these looks very swee on the map, let's do it!".

What poor planning, there's imply no planning! Period!!! Sinkies in Japanese firms are best at doing "surface job" with no real substance ti it! PAP are also good at doing "surface jobs" so that they can again con sinkies into shoving their assholes at their paramount leader and let him have unlimited access in the 60% assholes! Malaysian chinese on the other hand, can't even produce a good "surface job" to justify their existence!

I don't think planning was the problem. The real problem was wrong data being fed into the plans. No one projected this rapid growth in population.
