THIS year has been a year full of politics and I am very surprised at the extent of discontentment within the local community.

Each time I log on to Facebook, disturbing and venomous comments on the Government can be seen. Why are people so angry and discontented?

We need to be more understanding and, at the same time, appreciate what the Government has done for Singapore thus far.

People here are worrying where to travel for their year-end holiday while others around the world worry about making ends meet.

While the rest of the world faces job crunches and high unemployment, Singapore's unemployment rate remains low.

While checks on the Government is good, we should also be supportive and united as a nation, and that includes accepting the Government which has (overall) done its best for Singapore.

The seventh president of Singapore has been elected. I found it disheartening that people thought negatively of Dr Tony Tan, just because he once worked closely with the People's Action Party. I am not afraid of saying that I voted for "the spectacles" because I am concerned about how the nation can prosper and grow. Dr Tan has the expertise and foresight in the area of economics and I am sure he can assist the Government in creating better days ahead.

Hard times are expected with giant economies facing deficits, instability and crises. We need someone who is an expert in this area to guide us through this period. With a poor economy, more problems will surface, which will lead to further discontentment. I am sure Dr Tan will help minimise the effects of an economic crunch.

Be angry no more, my fellow Singaporeans. We are all winners as long as we stand united.

I have to agree with Ms Zheng on this. Tony Tan has worked in MTI and is familiar with the economics of the country and he was also the DPM. Lets not forget he also ran a Bank. He knows his way around. I think we are all in better position with Tony formulating policies, setting the economic agenda for the country in trouble times. With his extensive experience in decison making, it will be second nature for him in executing policies. I can literally visualise his presence in cabinet as he puts up his position paper and articulates his approach.

"Standing united" is overrated. What keeps us moving ahead is not unity, but sane policies.

Which rock has Karen been living under - does she really not know why people are upset?

wahpiang! a plea to all the balls licker... kindly please refrain from making the EP look like God.

no matter how experienced they were in all their CV, they are vying for an office with little or no executive powers over the establishment. needless to mention, the EP is not God, he will not be able to influence the global economy. the only influence he has is to have high-tea at the istana with his beloved ex-colleauges (provided they are free enough to do so). the only way he can make a difference is, in his own capacity, patch the gaps & cracks so that less people will fall through, provided he is genuine enough about the concept of public service.

the puppet is not pinochio with a cricket conscience, the puppet master will continue to have his way.

This got to be one of the worst quotes of the year...

The only reason why this incoherent piece was published and why TT was elected - She thought she was voting for a new PM. mad0218.gif

Sometimes I wonder why there was all these antagonism in the PAP against having a second centre of power. So in your words, you envision the present EP to be the new minister mother (MM) for the PM and his team?

Sorry bro, I am being sarcastic. Karen obviously does not realise that EP does not have executive powers and cannot touch policy. EP can of course have the avenue of suggesting policies similar to counter staff at MacDonald's

No apologies needed bro. happy0144.gif
I was so delirious that your trademark sarcasm was lost to me.
Wonder how many people voted for or were adverse to voting TJS because of his economic plan?

I dislike his economic plan. Just because it is non-PAP doesnt mean you vote for it. Do you think the iphone always works just because you hate the android?

There will be some oddballs! In fact, what's the problem? I can see majority of Sinkies are united, in fact, 65% of Them.

Perhaps, a presidential suggestion box of some sort!

He doesn't need to be president to do that. Now, what he needs to do is to make sure that nobody needs to repent. Since he represents everybody, as soon as some need to repent, he is a failure as our president. Let's watch.

Surname ZHENG, 90% fallen trash

i once had a primary school mate with the same name...but of course, with just an English name and surname...it could be anyone...just like Harry Lee...can be anyone but one...or it could everyone except one.
