THIS year has been a year full of politics and I am very surprised at the extent of discontentment within the local community.
Each time I log on to Facebook, disturbing and venomous comments on the Government can be seen. Why are people so angry and discontented?
We need to be more understanding and, at the same time, appreciate what the Government has done for Singapore thus far.
People here are worrying where to travel for their year-end holiday while others around the world worry about making ends meet.
While the rest of the world faces job crunches and high unemployment, Singapore's unemployment rate remains low.
While checks on the Government is good, we should also be supportive and united as a nation, and that includes accepting the Government which has (overall) done its best for Singapore.
The seventh president of Singapore has been elected. I found it disheartening that people thought negatively of Dr Tony Tan, just because he once worked closely with the People's Action Party. I am not afraid of saying that I voted for "the spectacles" because I am concerned about how the nation can prosper and grow. Dr Tan has the expertise and foresight in the area of economics and I am sure he can assist the Government in creating better days ahead.
Hard times are expected with giant economies facing deficits, instability and crises. We need someone who is an expert in this area to guide us through this period. With a poor economy, more problems will surface, which will lead to further discontentment. I am sure Dr Tan will help minimise the effects of an economic crunch.
Be angry no more, my fellow Singaporeans. We are all winners as long as we stand united.
