As the polls close, I thought it would be timely to have this discussion. Standing for Parliament and contesting in the GE is all fine and good and the vast number of adults will readily qualify as a candidate. Not so for PE.

The consititution is clear and it also contains clauses and conditions that allow capable people who can't be slotted in the recognised categories to be considered. Tan Jee Say's application was a straight forward with no special consideration unlike TKL. He was in the same category as TT and TCB. I am sure he was surprised as others when he got the COE and this came up again during his thank you party at his Frankel Home.

This piqued my curiosity and the hunt was on. TJS did not have an easy ride after he left PPS position. Morgan Grenfall to those who are not aware is PAP friendly entity and close to Govt. Peregrine was not but it went under and no fault of TJs. Not much happened in SCB. TJS was given Govett within 2 years of Allied Irish Bank buying it for slightly over £101m. When TJS took over the Asian Financial Crisis occurred. Change of strategy and various tactics failed and it never made any money during his entire tenure. He never got his bonus naturally. He was asked to go. The business was finally sold for all of £4m. AIB wrote off £97m from it's book. At the time of sale, the purchaser would cough up £10m if the portfolio had some unrecognised residual value and if certain performance hurdles were met. It's was never met and AIB never saw another penny.

So how did PEC classify it as £100m capitalisation when it was sold for all of £4m. This coupled with what he did at SCB and the same senior chaps that revealed about the bed hopping MP of West Coast did not give a pass mark about him except that he was a nice guy but out of his depth. The million dollar question is who is behind him and who prodded him to run.

My sense is that he has been used by the regime and he does not know it. PEC out of 3 members has a former Intelligence Chief and another member whose direct subordinate is Nsthan's daughter. That intelligence chief was a direct report of Nsthan when he was head honcho of the SID and ISD. So you have 2 out of 3 with loaded dice. No bookie in the world will accept such a coincidence let alone accept bets.

He is the least known of the candidates and yet the one people kowtow to.

People don't kowtow to any non-PAP candidates. Only PAP cult members kowtow to the regime.

Supporters of TJS mostly know very well his shortcomings, but most don't care. We all know who will win no matter how you vote (see scroobal prediction thread). The whole point of voting for TJS or TCB is simply to send a clear message to the regime.

What this election will show is the extent of the hardcore support for the ruling party.

TJS rough patch in the private world may not be fantastic, but in the eyes of anti-PAP electorate, how many of those elitist talents hogging ministers post and lining their pockets with tons of monies actually live up to their self-inflated worth and competence. As long as there is someone who has the guts to check on govt, and has a decent level of exposure and experience in both private and public career, it is worth a 6 yrs gamble. How worse can he be compared to Nathan.

Exactly - a bloody nose for the regime.

That is the general idea. When TJS during the session with Janadas kept talking about moral authority and that it was not written law , I realised that he was raising his profile for GE and was realistic about his chances with PE. His agenda is different but I don't think he realised that he was used by others as well. With TT's NS debacle looming larger than life and TCB is a soft option for the compliant majority, they needed someone else to soak up TCB's base. TJS entry became god sent and very timely. As a nation that is not politically savvy, it became opportunistic with many even in this forum believing that the President can do something. I am pretty sure it was last minute. Politics has always been intriguing. Take Thai Politics for instance. Every party sponsors their candidate and an opponent. There is no walk-over in Thai politics. Look at the Republicans with Bush, Quayle and Palin. With over 200 million people, you would have thought that their talent base would be better than that. Proxy candidates are easier to handle. TJS mystery prevails.

TJS--take at least 11 years to turn non-PAP. At Least TCB voted against his party and TKL had some anti-PAP work.

You figure out why TJS was so silent since he left GCT? Or if he was so against the ISA, why did he ever bother to serve GCT? What sort of service has he done to the people besides being a greedy minded money making (or losing) capitalist? Even TCB served as a Doctor in a Village.

Yes, I would think so. I never expected TJS to be in the equation. But when he was in, the ploy seemed more obvious. In face of fierce competition, each candidate got to stand behind something to stand out. TJS took his chances and tried to experiment how far he could stretch by adopting a more radical approach, and like what many people have guessed, he himself was not ready for the host of Istana seat in the first place. That's why he declared 2/3 winner. Seem to further confirm that he has already hit his objective.

There is no mystery in it, just have to observe carefully who, what, how and when.

Goh, it's all your party member's fault. If she did not support TJS, we would get the non-PAP candidate.

I am no longer the SG of the Party lah! You will see something happening in the coming months, just wait and see.

So it has finally come out. Please, mr Goh, just clear it from your system. You quit NSP for the same reason as you quit WP -- because like a child with a lollipop you feel you want a 2nd sweet but couldn't get it. I don't blame you. Its human nature. Just come clean with us and we will understand.

You are so strange. Who told you I quit NSP? You are really dreaming isit? I am still NSP member!

You are the NSP member with less influence than a 26 year old girl who supported the wrong candidate.

Don't really overestimate of such involvement and endorsements by us.

Put it simply, this result reflects and reveal the political structure of support bases for PAP, Opposition and the Middle Ground.

It reveals stupidity on you and your party members. Not forgetting Jeannette C-A was also involved

I have seen brilliant people who could not handle their ego. This guy is quite bright, and someone who would not have been in MTI and be a PPS without some grey matter in place. They must have sized him well. He is now dead politically. He will be remembered only too well.

Avoiding split votes is tactic 101 and anyone who has half a brain knows that. It tells you how simplistic the likes of Michelle, Jeannette and Nicole are. Jeanette and Michelle have no excuse. They would have known about TCB. When Ngiam Tong Dow spoke about having a totally monopoly in talent he covered the political landscape and TCB was one of them Dixie Tan was the other prominent one.

He may have grey matter, but only on financial and capitalistic ideas. And somehow, for 10-11 years after he had those grey matter, he never used it and suddenly wanted to jump into the deep end of the pool this year.
