Jewellery designers should meet customers' needs
By Lin Wenjian
SINGAPORE needs jewellery designers who pay attention to not only form and aesthetics, but also to customers' needs, wants and desires, said Major-General (NS) Chan Chun Sing, Acting Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports and Minister of State for Information, Communications and the Arts, at the opening of the seventh Singapore International Jewellery Show (SIJS) at Marina Bay Sands Singapore on Wednesday.
In his speech, MG Chan quoted latest figures from the Department of Statistics which show that the jewellery industry contributed $4.5 billion worth of sales receipts in 2009 and employed more than 6,000 workers.
To help groom more all-rounded designers who can produce jewellery that appeal to customers, MG Chan said that the Government has put in place initiatives such as the Design for Enterprises programme to encourage local companies to integrate design into their business strategies.
Other measures include the Local Enterprise and Association Development Programme that is managed by Spring and International Enterprise Singapore to provide funding to various bodies such as the Singapore Jewellers Association to improve their capabilities and productivity.
This year's jewellery show runs from today to Sunday and features 180 exhibitors from 25 countries such as Singapore, Hong Kong and Australia.
Among the gemstones on display is a set of pendant and earrings weighing a total of 71-carats, from Malaysian jeweller DeGem, that is priced at $5 million. The show is open to the public, but visitors must register at the entrance with a photo ID and have their pictures taken for security reasons.
